CH ECK VALV E
DESCRIPTION
A single wash er system ch eck valve is standard
equipm ent on th is model, and is installed in the
washer syst em plumbing (Fig. 4). Th e check valve is
integra l to the washer plum bing fitting located on
the under side of th e cowl top pan el behind the rear
of th e hood pan el opening in the engine compart-
ment . The check va lve con sists of a molded pla st ic
body wit h three ba rbed hose nipples, one at t he inlet
side of the valve body and two at the outlet side. Th e
check valve can not be adjusted or r epa ired a nd, if
faulty or da maged, it mu st be replaced.
OPERATION
The check valve provides more than on e function
in t his a pplicat ion. It serves as a plumbing conn ector
fitting between t he engine compa rtment and washer
nozzle sections of the washer supply h ose. It prevents
washer fluid fr om draining out of the washer supply
hoses back to the washer reservoir. This drain-back
would r esu lt in a lengthy delay from when the
washer switch is a ctuated until washer fluid wa s dis-
pensed throu gh the washer nozzles, because th e
washer pum p would ha ve to refill t he wa sh er plumb-
ing from t he reser voir to t he nozzles. Su ch a drain-
back condition could also resu lt in wat er, dirt, or
other outside contam ina nts being siphon ed into the
washer syst em throu gh the washer nozzle orifice.
This water could subsequen tly freeze and plug t he
nozzle, while oth er contamin ant s cou ld int erfere with
pr oper nozzle oper ation an d cause improper nozzle
spray pa tter ns. In a ddition , the check va lve pr even ts
washer fluid from siph oning t hrough th e washer noz-
zles a fter th e washer system is t urned Off.
Whe n the w as he r p ump p res s urize s and p ump s
washer fluid from t he reser voir through the washer
plumbing, t he fluid pressure unsea ts a diaphragm
from over a sump well within the valve by over riding
the sprin g pr essu re applied to it by a piston. With
the diaphr agm unsea ted, washer fluid is a llowed to
flow towa rd the two washer nozzles. When the
washer pump stops operatin g, the spring pressure on
the piston seats the diaphragm over th e sump well in
the va lve and fluid flow in either direction within the
washer plumbing is prevent ed. Th e check valve ca n-
not be adju st ed or repa ired a nd, if faulty or damaged,
it must be repla ced.
