TRACTION CONTROL MAL-
FU N CT I ON I N DI CAT OR
DESCRIPTION
A tr action control (ASR) malfunct ion in dicator is
st andar d equipm ent on all instrument clusters. The
traction control malfunct ion indicator is located nea r
the lower edge of the in st rumen t cluster, to the right
of the multi-fu nction indicator display. The tr action
control m alfu nction indicator consists of an icon t hat
gra phically depicts a t ire a nd two skid mar ks
imprinted within a r ectan gular cut out in the opa que
layer of the instrument cluster overlay. The dar k
outer layer of the overlay pr events t he in dicator fr om
being clear ly visible when it is not illu minated. An
amber Ligh t E mit ting Diode (LED) behind the cut out
in the opa que la yer of the overlay ca uses the icon to
appear silhouet ted aga inst an amber field through
the tran slucen t outer layer of the overlay when t he
indicator is illu min ated from behind by the LED,
which is solder ed onto the instrumen t cluster elec-
tronic circuit boa rd. The tra ction control malfunction
indicator is serviced as a unit with th e instru ment
cluster.
OPERATION
The tr action con trol (ASR) ma lfun ction indicator
gives the vehicle oper ator an indica tion wh en the
traction contr ol system is fault y or inoperative. This
indicator is controlled by a tra nsistor on th e i n st ru-
ment clust er circuit board based upon cluster pro-
gra mmin g a nd elect ronic messa ges received by th e
cluster from the Cont roller Antilock Bra ke (CAB)
over the Cont roller Area Network (CAN) data bus.
The tract ion control malfun ction indicator Light
Emitting Diode (LE D) is complet ely cont rolled by t he
instr umen t cluster logic circu it, a nd th at logic will
only allow t his indicator to oper ate when th e instru-
ment cluster detect s th at the ignition switch is in t he
On posit ion. Therefore, the LED will a lways be off
when t he ignition switch is in an y position except
On. The LED on ly illuminates when it is provided a
pa th to grou nd by the instr umen t cluster tra nsistor.
The instrument cluster will tur n on the traction con-
trol malfunction in dicator for th e following rea son s:
Bulb Test - Ea ch time the ignition switch is
turned to the On position t he tr action cont rol indica-
tor is illum inated as a bulb t est until th e engine is
star ted.
Tra c ti o n Co n tro l (AS R ) Ma lfu n c tio n In di c a -
to r La m p -On Me s s ag e - Each time the clu st er
receives a tr action con trol ma lfunction indicator
lam p-on messa ge from t he CAB, the indicator will be
illuminated. The indicator remains illuminated until
the cluster receives a lamp-off message from th e
CAB, or until t he ignition switch is tur ned to the Off
position , whichever occurs first.
The CAB continua lly m onit ors t he tra ction control
(ASR) syst em cir cuits and sen sor s to decide whet her
the system is in good oper ating con dition. Th e CAB
then sends th e proper lam p-on or lamp-off messa ges
to the instrumen t cluster. If the CAB sends a
lam p-on message a fter t he bu lb t est, it in dicates that
the CAB has det ected a syst em m alfu nction a nd th at
the tra ction control (ASR) system has become in oper-
ative. The CAB will store a Diagn ost ic Trou ble Code
(DTC) for any m alfu nction it detects. In addition , if
the traction cont rol malfunction indicator is illumi-
nated, t he CAB will deactiva te an activated tr action
control system and engine power output ma y be
reduced. See t he owners m anua l in th e vehicle glove
box for m ore in format ion on t he features, use, act iva-
tion and deact ivation of the traction control (ASR)
system. For pr oper diagnosis of the traction cont rol
system, the CAB, t he CAN data bu s, or the electronic
message inputs to th e i n st rumen t cluster that con trol
the t raction control malfunction in dicator, a diagnos-
tic sca n tool is r equired. Refer to th e a ppropriate
diagnostic informat ion.
TURN SIGNAL INDICATOR
DESCRIPTION
Two tu rn signa l in dicators, one right an d on e left,
are standard equipment on all instr ument cluster s.
The turn signal indicator s a re loca ted nea r the u pper
edge of the inst rument cluster, one to ea ch side of the
speedom eter. E ach tu rn signa l indicator consists of a
arrow-sh aped cutou t of the In tern ational Control and
Displa y Symbol icon for Tur n Warn ing in the
opa que la yer of th e instr ument cluster overla y. The
da rk outer layer of the overla y prevents these icon s
from bein g clearly visible when th ey a re not illum i-
nated. A gr een Ligh t Emitting Diode (LE D) behind
each turn signal indicator cu tout in the opaque la yer
of the over lay cau ses t he icon to appear in gr een
through the tr anslucent out er layer of the overla y
when the in dicator is illuminat ed from behind by the
LED, which is soldered on to th e instr ument clu st er
electronic cir cuit board. Th e tur n sign al indica tors
are serviced as a un it wit h the instr umen t cluster.
OPERATION
The t urn signa l in dicators give an indication to the
vehicle operat or th at t he turn sign al (left or righ t
indicator fla sh ing) or hazard war ning (both left and
right in dicators flash ing) ha ve been selected and a re
operat ing. Th ese in dicators ar e controlled by transis-
tors on t he instrument clust er electron ic circuit board
based upon t he cluster program ming and a har d
wired input received by the clu st er fr om t he turn sig-
nal relay through th e turn signal a nd hazar d wa rn-
ing switch circu itry of the multi-function switch on
