STANDARD PROCEDURE - INSPECTING TAP-
PET CLEARANCE
(1) Check engine oil level, adjust as n ecessary.
(2) Warm engine t o oper ating temper atu re
(approx. 80°C, 176°F).
(3) Remove the cylin der head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - REMOVAL).
(4) Rotat e t he engine by th e cr ankshaft un til the
camsha ft, at t he ta ppet to be test ed, is at it ’s base
circle (cam sh aft nose must point upwa rd) (Fig. 20).
NOTE: Do not use a tool that will mar or damage
the tappet surface. If applied pressure is too strong
the tappet will appear to drop, but what happens is,
the valve opens.
(5) Use a pressin g t ool and a pply pr essu re to the
tappet by hand (Fig. 20).
(6) If the tappet drops faster in compar ison to t he
other t appets, remove the ca mshaft a nd repla ce the
tappet.
REMOVAL
NOTE: Tappets are serviced Only when replacing
the camshaft housing. Inspect tappet clearance
(Refer to 9 - ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CAM-
SHAFT(S) - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
(1) Disconn ect nega tive battery cable.
(2) Remove engine cover. (Refer to9-ENGINE -
REMOVAL).

(3) Remove h igh pr essu re lines and in ject ors
(Refer to 14 - FUEL SYSTEM/F UEL INJ ECTION/
FUE L INJ ECTOR - RE MOVAL).
(4) Remove cylinder head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - REMOVAL).
NOTE: Rotate engine at the crankshaft only. DO
NOT rotate the engine at the camshaft. DO NOT
rotate the engine backward.
(5) Position piston of cylinder #1 t o ign ition TDC.
(6) Lock inlet camshaft (Fig. 21).
