(7) Remove timin g ch ain tension er (Refer t o 9 -
ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BE LT/CHAIN
AND SPROCKETS - REMOVAL).
NOTE: The lower portion of the cylinder head front
cover is sealed with RTV sealant. Carefully tug front
cover after bolt removal to loosen from cylinder
head.
(8) Remove cylinder head fron t cover (Refer t o 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HE AD - REMOVAL).
(9) Remove top side rail (Refer to9-ENGINE/
CYLINDER H EAD - RE MOVAL).
CAUTION: For all work in which the crankshaft
should not rotate, secure camshaft gear to timing
chain.
(10) Mark cam sh aft sprocket rela tive to tim ing
chain.
(11) Unbolt camshaft sprocket from exhau st ca m-
sh aft.
NOTE: Note the position of dowel pin for camshaft
sprocket alignment during reassembly.
(12) Remove cam sh aft sprocket.
CAUTION: Camshaft bearing caps must remain in
proper order and position.
NOTE: Slacken the bolts of the camshaft bearing
caps evenly in steps of one turn until the back
pressure is eliminated. Camshafts must not be
twisted when slackening the camshaft bearing
caps.
(13) Paint mark or scribe ea ch camshaft bea ring
cap, iden tifying which camsha ft and wh ich position.
(14) Remove the ca mshaft bearing caps a t exh aust
camsha ft bearing cap #1, #3,#4 and #6 in sequence.
(15) Remove the ca mshaft bearing caps a t inta ke
camsha ft bearing cap #1, #3,#4 and #6 in sequence.
(16) Slacken the exh aust camshaft bearing cap
bolts in dividu ally a t t he #2 cap th en the #5 ca p in
st eps of on e r evolution u ntil the ba ck pressure is
removed.
(17) Slacken the int ake cam sh aft bearing cap bolts
individually at t he #2 cap then t he #5 cap in st eps of
one revolu tion until the back pressure is r emoved.
(18) Remove th e inlet a nd exh aust cam sh afts (Fig.
22).
NOTE: Inspect camshaft and housing for wear or
damage. Inspect the housing oiling ducts for build
up or restrictions, clean as necessary. Also inspect
the camshaft end cover for wear or damage, replace
camshaft as necessary.
