(11) St art engine and re-check for vibration. If lit-
tle or n o change in vibra tion is evident, move clamp
to th e next positions and r epeat vibra tion test .
NOTE: If there is no difference in vibration at the
other positions, the vibration may not be propeller
shaft.
(12) If vibration decreased, insta ll a second clamp
(Fig. 2) and repeat vibration t est.
(13) If addition al clamp ca uses additional vibra -
tion, separate cla mps 1/2 inch above and below the
mark. Repea t the vibr ation test (Fig. 3).
(14) Increa se distance between clamps a nd repeat
test unt il vibra tion is at the lowest level. Bend the
slack end of th e cla mps so the screws will not loosen.
(15) If vibra tion rem ains un acceptable, preform
the procedure t o the front end of the propeller sh aft.
(16) Install the wheel and tires. Lower the vehicle.
PROPELLER SHAFT RUNOUT
(1) Clean the propeller shaft surface wh ere t he
dial indicator will conta ct the shaft.
(2) The dial indica tor must be insta lled perpen dic-
ula r to the sh aft surfa ce.
(3) Measur e ru nout at the cen ter a nd en ds of th e
sh aft a way from weld ar eas, to en su re weld pr ocess
will not effect the measuremen ts.
(4) Refer to Runou t Specificat ions chart.
(5) If propeller shaft is out of specification, rem ove
pr opeller shaft and index the sha ft 180°. Insta ll th e
pr opeller sh aft and m easure sh aft runout again.
(6) If propeller sha ft is now within specifications,
mark sha ft and yokes for proper orientation.
(7) If propeller sh aft run out is n ot within specifica -
tions, check runout of the tr ansmission and axle.
Correct as necessa ry an d repea t pr opeller shaft
runout measu remen t.
(8) Replace propeller sha ft if th e runout st ill
exceeds the limits.
