DESCRIPTION - TIRES
Tires are designed and en gineered for each specific
vehicle. Th ey provide the best overall performance
for n ormal operat ion. The ride and ha ndling ch arac-
teristics match the veh icle’s requir ements. With
pr oper care they will give excellent relia bility, tra c-
tion, skid r esistance, an d t read life.
Driving habits h ave more effect on tire life tha n
any oth er factor. Ca reful driver s will obt ain in most
cases, much grea ter milea ge tha n sever e u se or ca re-
less drivers. A few of th e drivin g h abit s which will
sh orten the life of a ny tire a re:
• Ra pid accelera tion
• Severe brake a pplicat ions
• High speed driving
• Excessive speeds on tu rns
• Striking cur bs and other obstacles
Radia l-ply tires ar e more pron e to irregular trea d
wear. It is im por tant t o follow the t ire rot ation int er-
val shown in the section on Tir e Rot ation, (Refer to
22 - TIRES/WH EELS - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
This will help to a chieve a gr eater trea d life.
TIRE IDENTIFICATION
Tire type, size, aspect ra tio and speed rat ing ar e
encoded in th e lett ers and numbers imprinted on th e
side wa ll of the tire. Refer t o the cha rt t o decipher
the t ire ident ifica tion code (Fig. 11).
Perfor mance tires h ave a speed rating lett er aft er
the aspect ratio num ber. Th e speed ratin g is not
alwa ys prin ted on the tire sidewall. Th ese ratings
are:
• Q up to 100 mph
• R up to 106 mph
• S up to 112 mph
• T up to 118 mph
• U up to 124 mph
• H up to 130 mph
• V up to 149 mph
• Z mor e tha n 149 mph (consult the t ire m anu-
facturer for the specific speed r ating)
An All Season type tire will ha ve eit her M+S,M
& S or M–S (indicating mud and sn ow tract ion)
imprinted on t he side wall.
TIRE CHAINS
Tire snow chains may be u sed on certain models.
Refer to t he Owner’s Manual for more information.
