HOA T COOLANT
WARNING: ANTIFREEZE IS AN ETHYLENE-GLYCOL
BASE COOLANT AND IS HARMFUL IF SWAL-
LOWED OR INHALED. IF SWALLOWED, DRINK
TWO GLASSES OF WATER AND INDUCE VOMIT-
ING. IF INHALED, MOVE TO FRESH AIR AREA.
SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT
STORE IN OPEN OR UNMARKED CONTAINERS.
WASH SKIN AND CLOTHING THOROUGHLY AFTER
COMING IN CONTACT WITH ETHYLENE-GLYCOL.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DISPOSE OF
GLYCOL BASE COOLANT PROPERLY, CONTACT
YOUR DEALER OR GOVERNMENT AGENCY FOR
LOCATION OF COLLECTION CENTER IN YOUR
AREA. DO NOT OPEN A COOLING SYSTEM WHEN
THE ENGINE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE OR
HOT UNDER PRESSURE, PERSONAL INJURY CAN
RESULT. AVOID RADIATOR COOLING FAN WHEN
ENGINE COMPARTMENT RELATED SERVICE IS
PERFORMED, PERSONAL INJURY CAN RESULT.
CAUTION: Use of Propylene-Glycol based coolants
is not recommended, as they provide less freeze
protection and less corrosion protection.
The cooling system is designed a round the coolant.
The coolan t mu st accept heat from engine metal, in
the cylinder hea d ar ea n ear the exhaust valves and
engine block. Th en coola nt carries the heat to t he
radiator where th e t ube/fin radia tor can tra nsfer the
heat to the air.
The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder
heads, and wa ter pu mps requ ires special corr osion
pr otection. Use coolant approved to MB 325.0, such
as EURO P eak Coola nt/Anti-freeze (OLD WORLD
INDUSTRIES), Zerex G05 or G48 (The Valvoline
Company), Glysantin G05 (BASF AG), MOPAR! part
number 05066386AA, or a n equ ivalent Extended Life
Coolan t with t he HOAT inhibit or system. This cool-
ant offer s t he best en gin e coolin g withou t corrosion
when mixed with 50% an ti-freeze and 50% distilled
water t o obta in a freeze point of -37°C (-34°F). If it
loses color or becom es con taminat ed, drain, flush,
and r eplace wit h fresh properly mixed coolant solu-
tion.
CAUTION: This coolant may not be mixed with any
other type of antifreeze. Mixing of coolants other
than specified (non-HOAT), may result in engine
damage that may not be covered under the new
vehicle warranty, and decreased corrosion protec-
tion.
CAUTION: Do not use coolant additives that are
claimed to improve engine cooling.
COOLANT PERFORMANCE
The required ethylene-glycol (antifreeze) an d water
mixtur e depends upon climate and veh icle oper ating
conditions. The coolant perfor mance of various mix-
tures follows:
Pure Water-Water can absor b more hea t th an a
mixtur e of wat er and ethylen e-glycol. This is for pu r-
pose of h eat tra nsfer only. Water also freezes at a
higher tempera ture and allows cor rosion.
100 p e rc e n t Eth y le n e -Gly c o l-Th e corrosion
inhibit ing additives in ethylen e-glycol need th e pres-
ence of water t o dissolve. Wit hout water, a dditives
form deposits in system . These act as insulation
causing tem perature to rise. The increa sed tempera -
ture can r esu lt in engine detona tion. In a ddition, 100
percent ethylene-glycol freezes at -22°C (-8°F).
50/50 Eth yle n e -Gly c o l a n d Wat e r-Is the recom-
mended mixture, it provides pr otection against freez-
ing to -37°C (-34°F). Th e antifreeze concentrat ion
must always be a minimum of 44 percen t, year-
round in all clim ates. If percen tage is lower, engine
pa rts may be eroded by ca vit ation. Ma xim um protec-
tion aga inst freezing is provided with a 68 percen t
antifreeze concentration, which prevents freezin g
down t o -67.7°C (-90°F). A high er per centa ge will
freeze a t a war mer tem perat ure. Also, a higher per-
centa ge of an tifreeze can ca use the en gine t o over-
heat because specific heat of a ntifreeze is lower th an
that of water.
CAUTION: Richer antifreeze mixtures cannot be
measured with normal field equipment and can
cause problems associated with 100 percent ethyl-
ene-glycol.
