The ECM con tinually mon itors th e engine coola nt
temper ature sensor to determine when the glow
plugs need to be en ergized in their pre-h eat operat-
ing mode. The ECM th en sen ds the proper wait-to-
st art lamp-on and lamp-off messages t o t he
instr umen t cluster. If th e instr umen t clust er turns on
the indicator after the engine is started, it may indi-
cate th at a ma lfun ction has occurred an d that the
engine glow cont rol system requires service. Th e
ECM will store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for
any malfun ction it det ects. For proper diagnosis of
the en gin e coolan t t empera ture sen sor, the engine
glow control syst em and circu its, th e E CM, the CAN
da ta bus, or the electron ic m essa ge input s t o th e
instr umen t clu st er th at control the wait-to-start indi-
cator, a diagnostic scan tool is requir ed. Refer to the
appropriate diagnostic in formation.
WASHER FLUID INDICATOR
DESCRIPTION
A wa sh er fluid indica tor is stan da rd equipment on
all instr umen t clu st ers. However, this indica tor is
only functiona l on vehicles equ ipped with an optional
washer fluid level switch integra l to th e washer
pu mp/motor un it on the washer reservoir. The
washer flu id indica tor is located nea r th e lower edge
of t he instr ument cluster, to the right of the multi-
function in dicator display. The washer fluid indicator
consists of th e Int erna tional Contr ol and Display
Symbol icon for “Wi n dsh ield Washer Fluid” imprinted
with in a rectan gular cut out in t he opa que layer of
the in st rumen t clu st er overlay. The dark outer layer
of t he overlay prevents the indicator from being
clear ly visible when it is not illu min ated. An amber
Light Emitting Diode (LED) behin d the cut out in the
opa que layer of the overla y causes the icon to appear
silhouetted again st a n a mber field through the tran s-
lucen t outer layer of th e overlay wh en th e indica tor
is illum ina ted from behin d by the LED, which is sol-
dered on to the inst rument cluster elect ronic circuit
board. The washer flu id indicator is serviced as a
unit with t he in st rumen t cluster.
OPERATION
The washer flu id indicator gives an in dication to
the vehicle operat or tha t the fluid level in the washer
reservoir is low. This indica tor is cont rolled by the
instr umen t clu st er circuit boa rd based u pon cluster
pr ogrammin g and a ha rd wired input from the
opt ional washer fluid level swit ch that is integral to
the washer pump/m otor unit . The wa sh er fluid indi-
cator is completely controlled by the instr umen t clus-
ter logic cir cuit, and tha t logic will only allow this
indicator to oper ate when th e instr umen t cluster
detects tha t t he ignition switch is in the On position.
Therefor e, t he in dicator will alwa ys be off when the
ign ition switch is in a ny position except On. The indi-
cator only illumina tes when it is swit ched t o gr ound
by the instrument cluster cir cuit ry. The instr umen t
cluster will turn on the washer fluid indicator for the
following rea son s:
• Bulb Test - Ea ch time the ignition switch is
turned to th e On position the brake wear indicator is
illuminated by th e instr ument clu st er for about two
seconds as a bulb test .
• Wa s h e r F l u i d L e v e l S w i t c h I n p u t - Each time
the cluster detect s groun d on the washer fluid switch
sense cir cuit (wa sh er fluid level swit ch closed =
washer flu id level low) wh ile the ign ition switch is in
the On position, t he wa sh er fluid indicator is illum i-
nated. The indicator remains illumina ted until th e
washer fluid level switch input t o the cluster is an
open cir cuit (washer flu id level switch open = wash er
fluid level accept able), or u ntil t he ignition swit ch is
turned to t he Off position , whichever occurs first.
The instrumen t clu st er continua lly m onit ors th e
washer fluid level switch t o determ ine the level of
the washer fluid. The instr umen t cluster logic applies
a delay str ategy t o this input to reduce t he negat ive
effect that fluid sloshing within th e r eservoir ca n
have on r eliable in dicator operation. The wa sh er
fluid level switch a nd cir cuit can be diagnosed using
conven tional dia gnostic tools and meth ods. For
pr oper diagn osis of t he instr umen t cluster circuitry
that contr ols the wa sh er flu id indica tor, a dia gnostic
sca n tool is required. Refer to t he appropriate diag-
nostic infor mation.
WATER - IN - FUEL INDICATOR
DESCRIPTION
A wat er-in-fuel indicator is st andar d equipment in
all in st rument clusters. The water-in -fuel indicator is
locat ed nea r th e lower edge of th e in st rumen t clu st er,
to the left of the m ulti-funct ion in dicator display. The
water-in-fuel indica tor consists of the Int erna tional
Contr ol a nd Display Sym bol icon for “Water In Fuel”
imprinted within a r ectan gular cut out in the opa que
layer of the instrument cluster overlay. The dar k
outer layer of the overlay pr events t he in dicator fr om
being clear ly visible when it is not illu minated. An
amber Ligh t E mit ting Diode (LED) behind the cut out
in the opa que la yer of the overlay ca uses the icon to
appear silhouet ted aga inst an amber field through
the tran slucen t outer layer of the overlay when t he
indicator is illu min ated from behind by the LED,
which is solder ed onto the instrumen t cluster elec-
tronic circu it board. Th e water-in-fuel indicator is
serviced as a un it wit h the instr umen t cluster.
OPERATION
The wa ter-in-fu el indica tor gives an indica tion to
the vehicle opera tor when ther e is excessive water
