(1) Begin th e cleanu p by using a vacu um cleaner
to r emove a ny residual powder from th e vehicle inte-
rior. Clean from outside the vehicle and work you r
way inside, so tha t you avoid kn eeling or sitting on a
non-cleaned a rea.
(2) Be certa in to va cuum t he hea ter an d air condi-
tioning outlets a s well (Fig. 4). Ru n the heat er and
air con dition er blower on the lowest speed set ting
and vacu um any powder expelled fr om t he outlets.
CAUTION: All damaged, faulty, or non-deployed
supplemental restraints which are replaced on vehi-
cles are to be handled and disposed of properly. If
an airbag unit or seat belt tensioner unit is faulty or
damaged and non-deployed, refer to the Hazardous
Substance Control System for proper disposal. Be
certain to dispose of all non-deployed and deployed
supplemental restraints in a manner consistent with
state, provincial, local and federal regulations.
(3) Next, remove t he deployed supplem enta l
restraint s from the vehicle. Refer t o the appropr iate
service remova l procedures.
(4) You may n eed to va cuum the interior of t he
vehicle a second time to recover all of th e powder.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - VERIFICATION TEST
The following procedur e shou ld be performed using
a diagn ost ic scan tool to verify pr oper supplement al
restraint system operation following the ser vice or
repla cement of any supplem enta l rest raint system
component.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel com-
ponent diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two
minutes for the system capacitor to discharge
before performing further diagnosis or service. This
is the only sure way to disable the supplemental
restraint system. Failure to take the proper precau-
tions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
(1) During the following t est, the ba tter y negative
cable remains disconnected and isolated, as it was
du ring the su pplemen tal restr aint system compon ent
removal and insta lla tion procedu res.
(2) Be cer tain that the diagn ost ic scan tool con -
tains the lat est version of t he proper diagnostic soft-
ware. Con nect the diagn ost ic t o th e 16-way Data
Link Conn ector (DLC). The DLC is loca ted on the
da sh pa nel benea th th e driver side lower edge of the
instr umen t pa nel, out board of th e steerin g column
(Fig. 5).
(3) Turn the ign ition switch to the On position an d
exit the vehicle with the dia gnostic scan tool.
(4) Check t o be certain that nobody is in the vehi-
cle, then reconnect the bat tery negative cable.
(5) Usin g the diagnostic, read a nd recor d the
active (cur rent) Diagnostic Trou ble Code (DTC) dat a.
(6) Next, use th e diagn ost ic to read and record any
st ored (historical) DTC dat a.
(7) If an y DTC is found in Step 5 or Step 6, refer
to th e appropriate diagnostic in formation.
(8) Use the diagn ost ic to era se th e stored DTC
da ta. If an y problems r emain, the stor ed DTC data
will n ot erase. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic
information to diagn ose any stored DTC tha t will not
erase. If th e stor ed DTC infor mat ion is successfully
er a sed , go t o St ep 9.
(9) Turn th e ign ition switch to t he Off posit ion for
about fifteen seconds, a nd th en back to the On posi-
tion. Observe the airba g in dicator in th e instrument
cluster. It should illuminate for four seconds, an d
then go out . This indicates that the supplement al
