REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (RKE)
The RKE transmit ter u ses radio frequ ency signals
to communica te with the Sent ry Key Rem ote Entr y
Module (SKREE M). The SKREE M is hardwired to
the Centr al Timer Module (CTM). Wh en th e operator
pr esses a but ton on t he tra nsmitter, it sen ds a spe-
cific request to th e SKREE M. In turn, the SKREEM
sends the appropriate request to the CTM to u nlock
the vehicle door s.
OPERATION
SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER
The Sen try Key Remot e En try Module (SKREEM)
receives an encrypted Radio F requency (RF ) sign al
from the transpon der key wh ich is rea d by t he
remot ely mounted ant enna ring at th e ign ition cylin -
der. The SKREEM th en decrypts t he sign al and
broadca st s the requested rem ote com mands to t he
appropriate modules in th e vehicle over t he Contr ol-
ler Area Networ k (CAN) data bus. A va lid tran spon -
der key ID mu st be incorporated into th e RF signal
in order for the SKREE M to pa ss t he messa ge on to
the a ppr opr iate modules.
Automatic tra nsponder key synchr onization is done
by t he SKREE M if a valid tran sponder key is
inser ted in to the ignit ion cylinder, an d the ign ition is
turned ON. This provides a maximu m operation win -
dow for RKE funct ions.
Each Sent ry Key Remot e E ntry System (SKREE S)
consists of a SKREEM, an ant enna ring moun ted
around the ignition cylinder, and a transponder key.
Each system ha s a secret key code unique to t hat
system. The secret key is electr onica lly coded in the
SKREEM and in a ll programmed transpon der keys.
It is used for im mobilization and RKE fu nctions for
da ta secu rity. In a ddition, each t ransponder key will
have a unique ident ification.
REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY
After pressing the lock butt on on the RKE trans-
mitter, a ll of the door locks will lock, the illu minated
entr y will tur n off (providin g all door s are closed),
and t he VTSS (if equipped) will a rm. After pressing
the u nlock but ton, on the RKE transmitter, one tim e,
the driver door lock will unlock, t he illuminat ed
entr y will turn on t he cour tesy lamps, and the VTSS
(if equipped) will disar m. After pressing the unlock
butt on a secon d time, the remaining door locks will
unlock.
The SKRE EM is capable of ret ain ing up to 8 indi-
vidual access codes (8 transmitters). If t he P RNDL is
in any position except park, t he SKRE EM will dis-
able the RKE. Use a dia gnostic scan tool or the cus-
tomer programmin g met hod to progr am t he RKE
system. However, the SKREEM will only allow RKE
pr ogrammin g wh en the ign ition is in th e ON posi-
tion, the PRNDL is in park position , and th e VTSS
(if equ ipped) is disarm ed.
REMOVAL
SENTRY KEY REMOTE ENTRY MODULE
(1) Open hood, disconnect and isolat e t he bat tery
nega tive cable.
(2) Wait two min utes for th e system r eserve capac-
itor to disch arge before beginning any system or com-
pon ent service.
(3) Remove top cover - cl u st er (Refer to 23 -
BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/TOP COVER - CLUS-
TER - REMOVAL).
(4) Disconn ect the one electrical connector t o the
SKREEM (Fig. 4) which is the tra nsponder ring con-
nector.
