(1) Position the driver air bag close enough to the
st eering wheel to reconn ect the clockspring driver
air bag pigtail wire connector at the back of t he air-
bag housing.
(2) When installing the driver air bag, reconnect
the clockspring driver airbag pigt ail wire con nector
to the air bag in flator connect or recept acle by pr ess-
ing straight in on the connector (Fig. 21). You can be
certa in that the connect or is fully engaged by listen -
ing ca refully for a distinct, audible cl ick as th e con -
nector snaps into place.
(3) Carefully posit ion the dr iver a irba g i n t he
st eering wheel. Be certain t hat the clockspr ing pig-
tail wire and h orn switch wires in t he steerin g wh eel
hub area are not pinch ed between the driver a irba g
and the horn switch ar mature.
(4) From t he underside of the st eering wheel,
insta ll a nd t igh ten the two scr ews t hat secur e t he
dr iver airba g to the horn swit ch armat ure with in the
hub cavity of t he steerin g wh eel. Tighten the screws
to 6 N·m (53 in. lbs.).
(5) Do not reconn ect the ba ttery negative ca ble a t
this t ime. The supplemental restra int syst em verifi-
cation test procedure sh ould be performed following
service of any supplem ental r estraint syst em compo-
nent . (Refer to 8 - ELE CTRICAL/RESTRAINTS -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - VERIFICATION TE ST).
FRON T SEAT BELT & RET RAC-
TOR
REMOVAL
The following procedur e is for r eplacem ent of a
faulty or da maged front sea t belt an d retr actor unit,
which in cludes a seat belt t ensioner for the driver
side as standard equipment. Vehicles equipped with
an optional pa ssen ger a irba g also have a seat belt
tensioner for the passenger side. (Refer to8-ELEC-
TRICAL/RESTRAINTS/SEAT BE LT TENSIONE R -
DESCRIPTION). If the seat belt or r etra ctor is faulty
or damaged, but th e sea t belt tension er is not
deployed, review th e recom mended procedures for
handling non-deployed supplemen tal rest raints.
(Refer to 8 - E LECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS - STAN-
DARD PROCEDURE - HANDLING NON-DE-
PLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RE STRAINTS). If t he
seat belt ten sioner ha s been deployed, review the rec-
ommen ded procedu res for service after a su pplemen -
tal r estraint deploymen t befor e r emoving the fron t
seat belt an d r etra ctor fr om the vehicle. (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS - STANDARD P ROCE-
DURE - SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL
RESTRAINT DEP LOYME NT).
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel com-
ponent diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two
minutes for the system capacitor to discharge
before performing further diagnosis or service. This
is the only sure way to disable the supplemental
restraint system. Failure to take the proper precau-
tions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, during
and following any seat belt service, carefully
inspect all seat belts, buckles, mounting hardware,
retractors, and anchors for proper installation, oper-
ation, or damage. Replace any belt that is cut,
frayed, or torn. Straighten any belt that is twisted.
Tighten any loose fasteners. Replace any belt that
has a damaged or inoperative buckle or retractor.
Replace any belt that has a bent or damaged latch
plate or anchor plate. Never attempt to repair a seat
belt component. Always replace damaged or faulty
seat belt components with the correct, new and
unused replacement parts listed in the
DaimlerChrysler Mopar Parts Catalog.
(1) Move the fron t seat to its most for ward posit ion
for easiest a ccess t o the B-pillar trim.
(2) Disconn ect and isolate the battery nega tive
cable. Wait two m inutes for the syst em capacitor to
dischar ge before fur ther ser vice.
(3) If the veh icle is so equipped, unsnap and
remove t he plastic cover fr om the screw th at secures
the front sea t belt lower anchor to the ou tboar d side
of the seat fra me (Fig. 22).
(4) Remove the screw t hat secur es the front sea t
belt lower an chor to the out board side of the seat
frame.
