HIGH BEAM INDICATOR
DESCRIPTION
A h igh beam indica tor is standard equipm ent on
all in st rumen t clu sters. The h igh bea m in dicator is
locat ed nea r th e lower edge of th e in st rumen t clu st er,
to the left of the m ulti-funct ion in dicator display. The
high beam indicator consists of th e In tern ational
Contr ol and Displa y Symbol icon for “High Beam”
imprinted within a r ectan gular cut out in the opa que
layer of the instrument cluster overlay. The dar k
outer layer of the overlay pr events t he in dicator fr om
being clearly visible when it is n ot illuminated. A
blue Light Emitting Diode (LED) behind th e cut out
in the opa que la yer of the overlay ca uses the icon to
appear silhouetted a gainst a blue field through the
translucen t ou ter layer of t he overlay wh en t he indi-
cator is illu min ated from behin d by th e LED, which
is soldered onto t he instr umen t clust er elect ronic cir-
cuit board. The high beam indicator is serviced as a
unit with t he in st rumen t cluster.
OPERATION
The h igh beam indica tor g ives an indication to th e
vehicle oper ator when ever th e headlamp high bea ms
are illu minated. Th is indicator is cont rolled by a
transistor on the instrument cluster circuit board
based upon cluster progr amming a nd a har d wired
input from the multi-fu nction switch. The high bea m
indicator Ligh t Emitt ing Diode (LE D) is completely
controlled by the inst rument cluster logic cir cuit, and
that logic will allow t his indicator to operate when-
ever the instrument cluster receives ba tter y cur rent
on the fused B(+) cir cuit. Therefor e, th e LED can be
illuminated rega rdless of the ign ition switch position .
The LED only illu mina tes wh en it is provided a path
to groun d by t he inst rument clust er t ransistor. Th e
instr umen t clu st er will tu rn on the high beam indi-
cator for th e following rea son s:
• Bulb Test - Ea ch time the ignition switch is
turned to th e On position th e h igh beam indicator is
illuminated by t he cluster for about two seconds a s a
bu lb t est .
• High Beams On Input - Each time th e cluster
receives a high bea m headlamps-on in pu t fr om th e
multi-fu nction swit ch, the high beam indicator will
be illu minated. The indicator remains illu min ated
until the clu st er receives a h igh beam headla mps-off
input fr om the m ulti-funct ion swit ch.
The instrumen t clu st er continua lly m onit ors th e
multi-fu nction switch in pu t to deter min e wh ether the
high beam indicator sh ould be illu minated or extin-
guished. The multi-fu nction switch an d t he mu lti-
function switch input circuit to the instr ument
cluster can be diagnosed using conventiona l diagnos-
tic tools and met hods. For proper diagn osis of the
instr umen t clu st er circuitry t hat controls th e high
beam indica tor, a dia gnostic scan tool is requir ed.
Refer to t he appropriate diagnostic informat ion.
LOW FU EL I N DI CAT OR
DESCRIPTION
A low fuel in dicator is stan da rd equipment on a ll
instr umen t clu st ers. Th e low fuel indicator is located
direct ly below t he low end of the fuel ga uge sca le.
The low fu el indica tor consist s of a small triangular
cutout in the opaqu e layer of th e instr umen t cluster
overlay. The da rk outer layer of the over lay prevent s
the indica tor fr om being clear ly visible when it is not
illuminated. An am ber Ligh t Emitt ing Diode (LE D)
behind th e cut out in the opa que layer of the overlay
causes th e triangle t o appea r in amber thr ough t he
translucen t ou ter layer of t he overlay wh en t he indi-
cator is illu min ated from behin d by th e LED, which
is soldered onto t he instr umen t clust er elect ronic cir-
cuit boa rd. The low fu el indica tor is serviced as a
unit with t he in st rumen t cluster.
OPERATION
The low fuel indicator gives an indication to the
vehicle operator when t he level of fu el in the fuel
tank becomes low. This indicator is contr olled by a
transistor on the instrument cluster circuit board
based upon cluster progr amming a nd a har d wired
input received by the cluster fr om t he fuel level sen -
sor in the fuel tank. Th e low fuel indicator Light
Emitting Diode (LE D) is complet ely cont rolled by t he
instr umen t cluster logic circu it, a nd th at logic will
only allow t his indicator to oper ate when th e instru-
ment cluster detect s th at the ignition switch is in t he
On posit ion. Therefore, the LED will a lways be off
when t he ignition switch is in an y position except
On. The LED on ly illuminates when it is provided a
pa th to grou nd by the instr umen t cluster tra nsistor.
The instrument clust er will turn on the low fuel in di-
cator for th e following rea son s:
• Bulb Test - Ea ch time the ignition switch is
turned to t he On position the low fuel indica tor is
illuminated for about two seconds a s a bu lb test .
• Fuel Level Sensor Input - Each time the clus-
ter receives an input fr om the fuel level sensor in di-
cating tha t the fuel level ha s rea ched abou t 12 liters
(3 gallon s) or less, the low fuel indicator is illum i-
nated. The indicator remains illumina ted until th e
cluster receives an in pu t from t he fuel level sen sor
indicating that t he fuel level is above 12 liters (3 gal-
lons), or un til th e ignition swit ch is turned to t he Off
position , whichever occurs first.
The fuel level sen sor in the fuel ta nk provides a
hard wired input to t he instru ment cluster circuitr y
