the instrument clu st er, direct ly below the speedom e-
ter. However, the odom eter and tr ip odom eter infor-
mation are not displayed sim ult aneou sly. The mi
(miles) or km (kilometer s) switch on the i n st rumen t
cluster circu it boar d toggles the display between
odom eter an d tr ip odomet er modes by depressin g the
switch push button th at exten ds t hrough the lower
edge of t he cluster lens, directly below th e mu lti-
function indicator LCD.
The odomet er and trip odomet er in formation is
st ored i n the instrument cluster memory. This infor-
mation can be in creased when the proper inputs a re
pr ovided to the in st rument cluster, but th e informa-
tion ca nnot be decreased. The odomet er can display
values up t o 999,999 kilomet ers (999,999 miles). The
odom eter lat ches a t these va lues, an d will not r oll
over to zero. The trip odomet er can display values up
to 999.9 kilom eters (999.9 miles) before it r olls over
to zero. Th e odom eter displa y does not have a deci-
mal point and will not show values less than a full
unit (kilomet er or mile), while the tr ip odomet er dis-
play does ha ve a decimal point and will show t enths
of a unit (kilometer or m ile). The unit of m easure
(kilomet ers or miles) for th e odometer and trip odom-
eter display is imprinted on the cluster overlay below
the left end of the LCD. The un it of measure for the
instr umen t cluster odom eter/trip odomet er is selected
at the t ime t hat it is manu factured, and can not be
changed.
The indica tions of the odometer/t rip odometer a re
not visible when the LCD is n ot illum inated. When
illuminated the indica tions appea r as dark charac-
ters silhouetted against an amber field. When the
exterior lighting is turned Off, th e display is illu mi-
nated at maximum br ightness. When th e exterior
lighting is turn ed On the display illumination level
can be adju st ed in concert with t he cluster genera l
illumination lighting u sing t he plu s and minus mult i-
function indicator pu sh buttons. The odom eter has a
Rental Ca r mode, wh ich will activate the mu lti-
function in dicator LCD a nd illum ina te th e odometer
information for about thirty secon ds after one of the
multi-fu nction indicator push bu ttons is momen tarily
depr essed, or aft er the key is inserted into the ign i-
tion switch lock cylinder with the ignit ion switch in
the Off position.
The odometer/t rip odomet er and th e miles/kilom e-
ters swit ch, an d t he miles/kilometers switch pu sh
butt on a re ser viced as a unit with t he instru ment
cluster.
OPERATION
The odomet er and tr ip odometer give an indica tion
to the veh icle opera tor of th e distance the veh icle ha s
traveled. This indica tor is cont rolled by t he instru -
ment clust er cir cuitry based upon clust er program -
ming and electronic messa ges received by the cluster
from the Controller Anti-lock Br ake (CAB) over the
Contr oller Area Network (CAN) data bus. The odom -
eter and trip odometer information is displa yed by
the mult i-fun ction indica tor Liquid Crystal Displa y
(LCD). The LCD will display the odom eter in forma-
tion whenever it is activa ted, a nd will display th e
last previously select ed odom eter or t rip odometer
information when the ignition switch is turn ed to the
On position . The instrument clu st er circuitry controls
the LCD an d pr ovides the followin g feat ures:
Od om e te r/Trip Od om e te r D is p la y Tog glin g -
Actuating t he multi-fu nction indica tor mi (miles) or
km (kilometer s) switch push button m oment arily
with the LCD illu min ated will toggle the display
between t he odom eter and trip odometer infor mat ion.
Each time the LCD is illuminat ed with the ignition
switch in th e On or St art posit ions, the display will
automatically return to the la st mode pr eviou sly
selected (odom eter or tr ip odomet er).
Trip Od o m e t e r Re s e t - When the multi-fu nc-
tion indicator mi (miles) or km (kilom eters) switch
pu sh but ton is pressed and held for lon ger than
about two seconds, the tr ip odometer will be reset to
000.0 kilomet ers (miles). The LCD must be display-
ing th e tr ip odom eter information in order for th e
trip odom eter information t o be reset.
The CAB con tinually monit ors the vehicle speed
pu lse information r eceived from the four wheel speed
sensors, t hen sends the proper distance messages to
the instr umen t cluster. F or pr oper diagnosis of the
wheel speed sensors, the CAB, t he CAN dat a bus, or
the elect ronic message input s to the instrument clu s-
ter th at cont rol t he odomet er/tr ip odom eter, a dia g-
nostic scan t ool is requir ed. Refer to t he a ppropriate
diagnostic informat ion.
PARK BRAK E I N DI CA T OR
DESCRIPTION
A par k bra ke indica tor is st andar d equipm ent on
all in st rument clu st ers. Th e park brake indica tor is
locat ed nea r th e lower edge of th e in st rumen t clu st er,
to the left of the m ulti-funct ion in dicator display. The
pa rk brake indicator consists of stencil-like cu tout of
the wor d PARK in the opaque layer of the instr u-
ment clu st er overlay. Th e dark outer layer of the
overlay pr events t he in dicator from being clear ly vis-
ible when it is not illu minated. A red Light Emit ting
Diode (LED) beh ind the cutout in the opa que la yer of
the over lay causes th e PARK t ext t o appear in r ed
through the tr anslucent out er layer of the overla y
when the in dicator is illuminat ed from behind by the
LED, which is soldered on to th e instr ument clu st er
electronic cir cuit boa rd. Th e park brake indica tor is
serviced as a un it wit h the instr umen t cluster.
