CAUTION: Never use compressed air to flush the
washer system plumbing. Compressed air pres-
sures are too great for the washer system plumbing
components and will result in further system dam-
age. Never use sharp instruments to clear a
plugged washer nozzle or damage to the nozzle ori-
fice and improper nozzle spray patterns will result.
INSPECTION - WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM
WIPER SYSTEM
The wiper bla des and wiper ar ms sh ould be
inspected periodically, not just wh en wiper perfor-
mance problems ar e experienced. This in spect ion
sh ould inclu de the following point s:
(1) In spect the wiper arms for any indica tions of
da mage, or contamination. If the wiper arm s are con-
taminat ed with an y for eign ma terial, clean them as
required. (Refer t o 8 - ELECTRICAL/WIPERS/
WASHERS - CLEANING). If a wiper a rm is dama ged
or corrosion i s evident, replace the wiper arm with a
new u nit. Do not at tempt to repa ir a wiper ar m th at
is dama ged or corr oded.
(2) Carefully lift the wiper bla de off of the glass.
Note the action of th e wiper arm hinge. The wiper
arm should pivot freely at the hinge, bu t wit h no lat-
eral looseness eviden t. If th ere is a ny bin ding evident
in the wiper arm hinge, or t here is evident la tera l
play in th e wiper a rm hin ge, replace t he wiper arm .
CAUTION: Do not allow the wiper arm to spring
back against the glass without the wiper blade in
place or the glass may be damaged.
(3) Once proper h inge action of t he wiper arm is
confirmed, check the hinge for proper spring tension.
Remove the wiper blade fr om t he wiper arm. E ith er
place a small postal scale bet ween the blade end of
the wiper arm a nd th e glass, or carefully lift the
blade end of the arm away from th e gla ss usin g a
sm all fish scale. Compare the scale r eadings between
the r ight a nd left wiper ar ms. Replace a wiper a rm if
it ha s compara tively lower spr ing tension, as evi-
denced by a lower scale reading.
(4) In spect th e wiper blades and squeegees for any
indications of dama ge, contamination, or rubber dete-
rioration (Fig. 3). If the wiper bla des or squeegees
are conta min ated with any foreign mater ial, clean
them and the glass a s requ ired. (Refer t o8-ELEC-
TRICAL/WIP ERS/WASHE RS - CLEANING). After
clean ing t he wiper blade an d the gla ss, if the wiper
blade still fails to clear th e glass without sm earing,
st reakin g, ch atterin g, hazing, or bea ding, replace t he
wiper blade. Also, if a wiper blade is da maged or the
squeegee ru bber is da maged or deterior ated, replace
the wiper blade with a n ew unit. Do n ot att empt to
repair a wiper blade that is damaged.
WASHER SYSTEM
The washer system componen ts shou ld be
inspected periodically, not just when wa sher perfor-

sh ould inclu de the following point s:
(1) Check for ice or oth er for eign material in the
washer reservoir. If contamin ated, clean and flush
the washer system . (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/WIP-
ERS/WASHERS - CLEANING).
(2) In spect th e washer plumbing for pinch ed, leak-
ing, deteriorat ed, or incorr ectly rou ted hoses and
da maged or disconnected hose fittings. Replace da m-
aged or deter iora ted h oses an d hose fit tings. Leakin g
washer hoses can sometim es be repaired by cutt ing
the hose at the leak and splicing it back together
using a n in-line connector fitting. Sim ilarly, sections
of deter iorated hose can be cut out an d replaced by
splicing in new sections of hose u sing in-line conn ec-
tor fittings. Wh enever r outing a wa sher hose or a
wire h arness contain ing a washer hose, it must be
routed a way from hot, shar p, or movin g pa rts. Also,
