BOOST PRESSU RE SEN SOR
DESCRIPTION
The boost pressur e sensor is mounted to the charge
air pipe (Fig. 4). The sen sor allows th e ECM to mon -
itor inta ke a ir down strea m of the tur bochar ger.
OPERATION
When th e int ake man ifold pressur e is high du e to
turbo boost, sensor volta ge ou tput is 2.0-4.7 volts.
The sensor receives a 5-volt s reference from th e
ECM. Sensor grou nd is also provided by the ECM.
The ECM uses boost pressu re com bined with inta ke
air temera ture t o determine t he volume of a ir enter-
ing the engine (Fig. 4).
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - BOOST PRESSURE
SENSOR
If the boost pressure sensor fails, the E CM records
a DTC into memory an d continues to operat e the
engine in one of the three lim p-in modes. When the
ECM is oper ating in t his mode, a loss of power will
be present, as if the tur bochar ger wa s not oper ating.
The best method for diagn osing faults wit h the boost
pr essu re sen sor is with the DRB III! scan tool. Refer
to the Diesel Powertr ain Diagn ost ic Ma nua l for m ore
information.
Refer t o On-Boar d Diagnostics in Emission s Con-
trol System for a list of Diagn ost ic Trou ble Codes
(DTC’s) for certain fuel system com pon ents.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconn ect the n egat ive battery cable.
(2) Unplug the elect rical connector.
(3) Remove the sensor ret ain ing bolts, r emove th e
sensor (Fig. 5) a nd O-ring.
INSTALLATION
(1) In spect boost pressure sensor O-ring for cuts or
abra sions, replace a s necessar y.
(2) Position the boost pressure sen sor a bove access
hole in the cha rge air pipe and pu sh down t o fit flu sh
(Fig. 21).
(3) In st all the bolts a nd tighten to 44 lbs. in. (5
N·m) (Fig. 21).
(4) Reconnect the sensor electrical conn ector (Fig.
21).
(5) Connect nega tive bat tery cable
CAM SH AFT POSI T I ON SEN -
SOR
DESCRIPTION
The camsha ft position sen sor is mou nted on the
cylinder head cover toward th e r ear of th e en gine.
The camshaft sen sor (Fig. 6) utilizes a n on contact
meth od on one segmen t of the camsha ft to recor d the
camsha ft posit ion. Wh en t he ECM receives the signal
from this sensor, it can then detect TDC of cylinder
number one. Th e signal from the camsh aft sen sor is
only required du ring engine star ting. Injection timing
