st raight out from the inflator to disconnect it from
the r eceptacle.
(7) Remove t he pa ssen ger a irbag and air bag door
from the inst rument panel as a unit.
INSTALLATION
The following procedur e is for r eplacem ent of a
faulty or da maged pa ssen ger airba g. If the airba g is
faulty or dama ged, bu t not deployed, review the rec-
ommen ded pr ocedures for handling non -deployed
su pplemen tal rest raints. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/
RESTRAINTS - STANDARD P ROCEDURE - HAN-
DLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL
RESTRAINTS). If the passenger airba g has been
deployed, review th e recom mended procedures for
service after a supplement al r est raint deploymen t
before removing the air bag from the vehicle. (Refer to
8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS - STANDARD PRO-
CEDURE - SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLE MENTAL
RESTRAINT DEP LOYME NT).
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel com-
ponent diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two
minutes for the system capacitor to discharge
before performing further diagnosis or service. This
is the only sure way to disable the supplemental
restraint system. Failure to take the proper precau-
tions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, use
extreme care to prevent any foreign material from
entering the passenger airbag, or becoming
entrapped between the passenger airbag cushion
and the passenger airbag door. Failure to observe
this warning could result in occupant injuries upon
airbag deployment.
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, the
passenger airbag door must never be painted.
Replacement passenger airbags are serviced with
doors in the original colors. Paint may change the
way in which the material of the airbag door
responds to an airbag deployment. Failure to
observe this warning could result in occupant inju-
ries upon airbag deployment.
(1) Carefully position the passenger air bag and
air bag door unit to the instr umen t panel (F ig. 29).
(2) When installing the passenger a irba g, recon-
nect th e vehicle wire ha rness connector to the airbag
inflator connector recept acle by pr essing st raight in
on the con nector. You can be certain that the connec-
tor is fully enga ged by list enin g carefu lly for a dis-
tinct, au dible click as t he conn ector snaps int o place.
(3) Push th e passenger airbag unit forwar d far
enough to engage t he lower edge of th e airbag door
with t he two lower clips in the instr umen t panel.
(4) In st all and t igh ten the two screws that secure
the flan ge of the passenger airba g hou sing to the
bracket on the instrument pan el st ructu ral su pport.
Tighten t he screws to 10 N·m (89 in. lbs.).
(5) In st all and t igh ten the two screws that secure
the passenger a irbag door upper clips t o t he instr u-
ment pan el ba se t rim. Tighten t he screws to 2 N·m
(18 in . lbs.).
(6) Reinstall th e instr umen t pan el top cover tray
onto the instrument pa nel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/IN-
STRUME NT PANEL/INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP
COVER - TRAY - INSTALLATION).
(7) Do not reconn ect the ba ttery negative ca ble a t
this t ime. The supplemental restra int syst em verifi-
cation test procedure sh ould be performed following
service of any supplem ental r estraint syst em compo-
nent . (Refer to 8 - ELE CTRICAL/RESTRAINTS -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - VERIFICATION TE ST).

(2) Remove th e four screws that secur e the pa ssen -
ger airbag bracket t o t he instrumen t panel stru ctural
su pport (Fig. 30).
