STANDARD PROCEDURE - DETERMINING CYL-
INDER PRESSURE LOSS
If an increa sed pr essu re loss was found with the
cylinder lea k test, inspect the engine by listening a t
the cylinder head gasket, a ir inta ke area, exhau st , oil
fill opening an d where inject ors and glow plugs enter
the cylinder h ead. Also check the engine coolan t in
the ra diat or or expansion reservoir for th e formation
of bubbles.

It is possible to pin poin t the pressur e loss of the
relevan t cylin der by spra yin g with clean engine oil.
Engine oil sea ls off the ga p bet ween the pist on and
cylinder wall briefly. If a reduced pr essu re loss now
occurs for a sh ort t ime, the ca use is very likely to be
the pist ons, piston rings or cylinder contact sur faces
of the relevant cylinder.
Deter mining the cause can be falsified by the posi-
tion of the piston ring joints. If suspicion exists t hat
the loss of pressure is ca used by the piston ring
joints being position ed direct ly one above t he other,
fit the parts to the engine and repeat this test after
running the engine for a sh ort tim e.
