clock rem ain s fun ctiona l regardless of t he ign ition
switch posit ion.
The vehicle operator can choose to h ave the
opt ional ambien t tempera ture indicator displa yed
instead of t he clock inform ation, bu t the clock a nd
ambient temperatur e in dicator cannot be displayed
at the same tim e. The clock or ambient t empera ture
indicator displa y option is select ed using the mult i-
function in dicator clock switch on the instru ment
cluster circuit board. Th is switch is actuated m anu-
ally by depressing the clock switch push bu tton that
extends th rough the lower edge of the cluster lens
below the left end of the mult i-function indica tor.
Actuating this swit ch momenta rily will t oggle the
display between the clock and am bient t empera tur e
indicator modes. Actua ting this switch t wice with in
about one secon d will cau se the display to toggle, but
then automa tica lly revert to t he originally selected
mode aft er about t wenty seconds.
See the owner s manual in the vehicle glove box for
more information on the fea tures, use, oper ation and
setting procedur es for the clock. For proper t est ing of
the instrument clu ster cir cuitry tha t controls the
clock funct ions, a diagn ost ic scan tool is r equired.
Refer to t he appropriate diagnostic informat ion.
COOLAN T LOW I N DI CAT OR
DESCRIPTION
A coolan t low indica tor is standar d equipmen t on
all instr umen t clusters. The coolant low indicator is
locat ed nea r th e lower edge of th e in st rumen t clu st er,
to the left of the m ulti-funct ion in dicator display. The
coolan t low indicator consists of the Inter national
Contr ol a nd Display Symbol icon for Low Engine
Coolan t imprinted with in a rectan gular cutou t in
the opa que layer of the instr umen t cluster overlay.
The da rk outer la yer of th e overla y prevent s the indi-
cator from being clea rly visible when it is not illumi-
nated. A red Light Emitting Diode (LED) behind th e
cutout in the opa que la yer of the overla y causes the
icon to appear silhouetted a gainst a red field throu gh
the tran slucen t outer layer of the overlay when t he
indicator is illu min ated from behind by the LED,
which is solder ed onto the instrumen t cluster elec-
tronic circuit boar d. Th e coolan t low indicator is ser-
viced a s a unit with t he in st rumen t cluster.
OPERATION
The coola nt low indica tor gives an indication to the
vehicle operat or wh en the en gin e coola nt level is low.
This indicator is contr olled by a transistor on th e
instr umen t clu st er circuit boa rd based u pon cluster
pr ogrammin g and a ha rd wir ed input received by the
cluster from t he engine coolant level swit ch. The cool-
ant low in dicator Light Em itt ing Diode (LE D) is com -
pletely cont rolled by t he inst rument cluster logic
circuit, an d t hat logic will only allow this indica tor to
operat e wh en the instru ment cluster det ects t hat the
ign ition switch is in th e On position . Therefore, th e
LED will always be off wh en the ign ition switch is in
any position except On. The LED only illum inates
when it is provided a pa th to gr ound by the instru-
ment clu st er t ransist or. The in st rument clust er will
turn on the coolant low in dicator for the followin g
reason s:
Bulb Test - Ea ch time the ignition switch is
turned to th e On position th e coola nt low indicator is
illuminated for about two seconds a s a bu lb test .
Engine Coolant Level Sw itch Input - Each
time t he cluster detect s an appropr iate input on t he
low coola nt fluid level sen se circuit (engine coolant
level swit ch resist ance low = en gin e coolant level low)
while the ignition switch is in the On position, the
coolan t low in dicator will be illu minated. The indica-
tor r emains illuminat ed until the low coolant flu id
level sense inpu t t o th e cluster changes (engine cool-
ant level switch resist ance high = engine coolant
level full), or unt il th e ignition swit ch is t urned to
the Off position , whichever occurs first. The engine
coolan t level switch also feat ures a diagnostic resis-
tor connected in para llel bet ween the switch input
and out pu t to pr ovide the cluster with verificat ion
that the low coolan t fluid level sense circu it is not
open or shorted.
The engine coolan t level switch int egral to the cool-
ant bott le provides a hard wired in put t o the instru-
ment cluster cir cuitr y through the low coolan t flu id
level sense circuit. The engine coola nt level switch
and th e low coolant fluid level sense circuit to t he
instr umen t clust er can be dia gnosed using conven-
tional diagnostic tools and met hods. For proper diag-
nosis of t he instrument cluster cir cuitry that contr ols
the coolant low indica tor, a diagn ost ic sca n tool is
required. Refer to the appropriate diagn ost ic infor-
mation.

GAU GE
DESCRIPTION
An en gin e coolant tem perat ure ga uge is stan da rd
equipm ent on a ll instr umen t clu ster s. The en gin e
coolan t t empera ture gauge is locat ed in the upper
right cor ner of the inst rument cluster, t o t he right of
the speedom eter. The en gin e coolan t tempera ture
gau ge consists of a mova ble gauge needle or poin ter
controlled by th e in strument cluster circuitry an d a
fixed 45 degree scale on the cluster overlay th at
reads left -to-right fr om 120° C to 40° C for Canadia n
vehicles, or fr om 250° F to 110° F for United Stat es
vehicles. An Inter national Control and Display Sym-
