WI PER BLADE
DESCRIPTION
Each wiper blade is secur ed by an in tegr al latch ing
pivot block to th e hook formation on t he tip of t he
wiper arm , and r ests on th e glass near the ba se of
the windshield when th e wipers ar e not in oper ation
(Fig. 26). Th e wiper bla de con sists of the following
components:
• Superstructure - The su per st ructure includes
severa l sta mped st eel bridges a nd links with claw
formations that grip th e wiper bla de elemen t. Also
included in this unit is the lat ching, molded plastic
pivot block th at secures t he su perstructur e to t he
wiper ar m. All of the meta l componen ts of the wiper
blade have a satin black fin ish applied.
• Element - The wiper element or squeegee is the
resilien t ru bber member of the wiper blade tha t con-
tacts t he glass.
• Flexor - The flexor is a r igid met al componen t
running along the length of the wiper elemen t on
each side, where it is gripped by the claws of the
su perstru cture.
All Sprinter models ha ve un equal lengt h wiper
blades with n on-replacea ble ru bber elemen ts (squee-
gees). The left (driver) side wiper blade is 60.0 centi-
meters (23.5 inches), and th e r igh t (passen ger) side
wiper blade is 55.0 centimeter (21.5 inches). These
wiper blades also include an anti-lift fea ture. Th e
wiper blades ca nnot be adju sted or repa ired. If fault y,
worn, or damaged the en tire wiper blade un it must
be replaced.
OPERATION
The wiper bla des a re moved back and fort h across
the glass by the wiper arms when the wipers are
being opera ted. The wiper blade super structu re is
the flexible fram e t hat gr ips the wiper bla de elemen t
and even ly distribut es th e force of t he spring-loaded
wiper a rm along the lengt h of t he element. The com -
bina tion of the wiper arm force and the flexibility of
the superstru cture makes th e element conform to
and mainta in proper conta ct with the glass, even as
the blade i s moved over the varied curvature th at
may be encountered a cross t he glass surface. The
wiper elemen t flexor pr ovides the claws of th e blade
su perstru cture with a rigid, yet flexible componen t
on the elemen t wh ich can be gripped. The ru bber ele-
ment is designed to be stiff en ough to maintain an
even cleaning edge a s it is dra wn acr oss the glass,
but resilien t en ough to conform t o the glass su rface
and flip from one cleaning edge to the other ea ch
time the wiper blade changes direct ions.
REMOVAL
NOTE: The wiper arms and wiper blades for this
model are both unequal in length, with the longer
arm and blade being installed on the left (driver)
side of the windshield.
(1) Turn the wiper cont rol knob on th e end of the
multi-fu nction swit ch cont rol stalk to the On posi-
tion. Cycle t he wiper blades to a convenient workin g
locat ion on the windshield by tur ning th e ign ition
switch to the On and Off position s.
(2) Lift th e wiper a rm to raise the wiper blade an d
element off of the glass, unt il th e wiper ar m h inge is
in its over-center position .
(3) To remove the wiper blade fr om th e wiper ar m,
depr ess the pivot block latch release tab under t he
tip of the arm and slide th e blade awa y from th e tip
