CRAN K SH AFT POSI T I ON SEN -
SOR
DESCRIPTION
The crankshaft position sensor is locat ed opposite
the t eeth on the flywheel an d uses a n on contact
meth od to record th e position of the cran ksha ft. Th e
leading edges of each tooth on the flywheel generate
a posit ive signal in the position sen sor, while the
trailing edges generate a negative signal. When the
crankshaft is rota tin g, an altern ating volta ge is pro-
du ced as a result.
The period of the sign al is the time requir ed by the
crankshaft to turn th rough the ga p between two fly-
wheel teeth. The clea ran ce between th e cr ankshaft
position sensor and th e teeth of the flywheel is fixed
by the in stallation.
Two teeth on t he flywheel a re missing. The result-
ing signal ga p is used by th e ECM to detect the TDC
position of cylinder nu mber one.
OPERATION
The cleara nce bet ween the cranksha ft position sen-
sor and the flywheel are fixed by the insta llation
position . Two teeth on t he flywheel a re missing. The
resultin g gap is used by the ECM to det ect DTC of
cylinder number one. The crankshaft position is cal-
cula ted to an accu racy of a fra ction of a degree so
that th e star t and end of injection ca n occur at
exact ly the right mom ent. Th e engine speed sign al is
also processed by the ECM from the cra nksh aft sen-
sor. This signa l is t hen tr ansferred to ot her cont rol
modules over th e CAN bu s.
If the cra nksh aft position sen sor fails, t he ECM
will st op t riggering the in ject ors, the engin e will
st all, th e engine wa rning light ma y or may not illu -
minate, but the engine will not rest art.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconn ect the n egat ive battery cable.
(2) Unplug the cranksh aft wir ing harness con nec-
tor.
(3) Remove the crankshaft sen sor retaining bolt
and rem ove sensor (Fig. 9).
INSTALLATION
(1) Position t he cr ankshaft position sen sor into the
access hole an d insta ll r etaining bolt.
(2) Tighten the reta ining bolt to 80 lbs. in . (9 N·m)
(Fig. 9).
(3) Connect cranksha ft position sensor wirin g ha r-
ness connect or (Fig. 9).
(4) Connect nega tive bat tery cable.

FUEL INJECTOR
There are individual fu el injectors for all five cyl-
inder s. Each in ject or nozzle h as seven holes. The fuel
injector s are used to spray fuel into the combu st ion
chamber. E ach injector h as a six digit a lphan umer ic
code on th e injector top which mu st be entered into
to ECM using the DRBIII! (Fig. 10). Specific moving
pa rts in side the injector a re graphit e coated to assist
with t he lu brica tion process.
