restraint syst em is fu nctionin g normally and that the
repairs are com plete. If the airbag indicator fails to
light, or ligh ts and st ays on, t here is still an active
su pplemen tal restr ain t system fa ult or m alfunction .
Refer to the appropriate diagnostic inform ation to
diagnose th e problem.
NOTE: If the Airbag Control Module (ACM) has been
replaced with a new unit, it will be necessary to ini-
tialize the new ACM. In order to function properly,
the ACM must be programmed for the correct stan-
dard and optional supplemental restraint system
components installed in the vehicle. To initialize the
ACM, a diagnostic scan tool is required. Refer to
the appropriate diagnostic information.
AI RBAG CON T ROL M ODU LE
DESCRIPTION
The Airba g Con trol Module (ACM) is secu red with
three screws to the top mounting surfa ce of a
st amped steel bra cket t hat is welded onto the floor
panel wit hin t he seat riser underneat h t he dr iver
side fron t seat in the passenger compar tmen t of the
vehicle (Fig. 6). A molded plastic pr otective cover is
insta lled over th e ACM a nd secured with integral
sn ap features to a flat meta l base plate sandwiched
between the bottom of the ACM a nd the mounting
bracket on th e floor panel (Fig. 7). Th is cover is
designed to shield the ACM and its wire ha rness con-
nection fr om oth er electrical com pon ents and wiring
locat ed within the seat riser ar ea beneat h t he driver
seat, a nd must always be reinsta lled following ser-
vice removal.
Concealed within a hollow in th e cen ter of the die
cast a luminum ACM housing is the elect ronic cir-
cuitry of th e ACM which includes a micr opr ocessor,
an elect ronic impact sensor, an electronic safing sen -
sor, an d a n ener gy st orage capacitor. A stamped
meta l cover pla te is permanently secured to th e bot-
tom of the ACM h ousing t o enclose and protect the
internal electron ic cir cuitry and componen ts.
An arrow pr inted on a label on the top of the ACM
housin g nea r th e r ear provides a visual verification
of th e proper orienta tion of t he u nit, an d shou ld
alwa ys be pointed t oward t he fr ont of the vehicle.
The ACM housing h as integral moun tin g flanges on
three corn ers. A molded plast ic electrical connector
recepta cle containing numerous termina l pins is inte-
gra l to the left facing side of t he ACM housing. These
term inal pins connect the ACM to the veh icle electri-
cal system th rough a dedicated ta ke out and conn ec-
tor of th e vehicle wire har ness.
The impact sen sor inter nal to the ACM are cali-
brat ed for th e specific vehicle, a nd are on ly serviced
as a un it wit h the ACM. In addit ion, t he ACM must
be electronically program med for the corr ect sta n-
da rd and optional supplement al restra int system
components installed in the veh icle. The ACM ca nnot
be repaired or a djusted a nd, if dama ged or fau lty, it
must be r eplaced.
OPERATION
The m icroprocessor i n the Airba g Con trol Module
(ACM) cont ains th e supplemental rest raint system
logic circuits an d controls all of the supplement al
restraint syst em com pon ents. The ACM u ses
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) a nd can communicate
with a diagnostic scan tool using a diagnostic Seria l
