OI L SEN SOR
DESCRIPTION
Oil level, oil tempera ture and oil quality a re
detected by mea ns of an oil sensor located in the oil
pa n. The sen sor which oper ates on the ca pa citance
pr inciple features a n integrated electr onic cir cuit
which analyzes the th ree sign als. the signals are con-
st antly relayed to the ECM a nd over t he CAN bus t o
the instr umen t cluster by mea ns of PWM signal.
OPERATION
Oil qua lity is detected for indica ting t he need-
based oil change interva l. Th e oil qu ality is detected
on the basis of t he capa cita nce of t he engine oil
(dielectrics, does n ot conduct electr icity), t his being
as much as six t imes greater in case of poor qu ality.
Oil level and oil qu ality a re sepa rate of each other.
The in formation is first of all compen sa ted in th e
ECM before being tra nsmitted over the CAN bus.
Faults at th e oil sen sor a re detected by the ECM
and en tered into fault memory. The voltage for the
oil sen sor (a pprox.5V) is su pplied by the ECM.
