WATER IN FUEL SENSOR
DESCRIPTION
The water in fuel sensor (WIF ) is located in the
fuel filter h ousing (Fig. 32). The sen sor det ects th e
pr esence of water in the fuel. If wa ter is present in
the fuel a signal is sent to t he ECM and the ECM
signals th e instrument clust er, over the CAN bu s, t o
illuminate th e water in fuel warning.
OPERATION
The non-dielect ric propert ies of t he wat er a llow t he
sensors probes to close the electr onic circuit when
water is pr esent in t he system. Wh en diesel fuel is
pr esent in t he syst em, its dielectric (does not conduct
electricity well) proper ties do not allow a ny electr ical
contact between th e probes. A 12V power signal is
alwa ys presen t in order to illuminat e t he in dicator on
the instrument cluster. F or removal and installa tion
pr ocedure refer to (Refer to 14 - FUEL SYSTE M/
FUE L DE LIVE RY/FUE L FILTER - RE MOVAL).
