PARTS AND LUBRICANT RECOMMENDATIONS
Lubricating grease is ra ted for quality an d usage
by the NLGI. All a pproved products ha ve the NLGI
symbol (Fig. 1) on the label. At the bot tom NLGI
symbol is th e usage and quality iden tification letters.
Wheel bearing lubricant is identified by t he let ter
“G”. Ch assis lubr icant is ident ified by t he lat ter “L”.
The letter following th e usage lett er indicates the
quality of t he lubricant . The following symbols indi-
cate the h igh est quality.
When ser vice is required, Da imlerCh rysler Corpo-
ration recom mends that only MOPAR! br a n d p a r ts,
lubr ican ts and ch emica ls be used. MOPAR! pr ovides
the best engineer ed produ cts for servicing
Daim lerChrysler Corporation vehicles.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID - NAG1
NOTE: Refer to Service Procedures in this group for
fluid level checking procedures.
Use ATF approved to MB 236.10, MB 236.12, such
as Shell ATF 3403/M-115, MOPAR! pa rt nu mber
05127382AA, Fu chs/Shell ATF 3353, or equivalent.
Automatic Tran smission Fluid (ATF ) is red in color
when n ew. The ATF is dyed red so it can be identified
from other flu ids used in the vehicle such as en gine
oil or antifreeze. The red color is not per manen t a nd
is n ot an indicator of fluid condition . As the vehicle is
dr iven , the ATF will begin to look da rker in color and
may eventually becom e brown . Th i s i s no r m a l.
FLUID ADDITIVES
Daim lerChrysler strongly recommen ds against the
addition of a ny fluids to the tra nsmission, other tha n
those automatic tr ansmission fluids listed above.
Except ions t o t his policy a re the use of specia l dyes
to aid in detect ing fluid leaks.
Var ious “special” a dditives and supplemen ts exist
that cla im to i m pr ove sh ift feel and/or qu ality. These
additives and oth ers a lso claim to improve converter
clutch opera tion and in hibit overh eating, oxidat ion,
var nish, an d slu dge. Th ese claims h ave not been su p-
por ted t o the satisfaction of DaimlerChrysler and
these additives must not be used. Th e use of tra ns-
mission “sea lers” shou ld also be avoided, since they
may adversely affect t he integrity of transmission
seals.
