is closed with t he wiper system tu rned Off, the inter-
mittent wipe logic circuitry opera tes th e wiper motor
in t he sam e m anner as it does t o provide the int er-
mittent wipe mode operation. After the state of th e
washer swit ch changes t o open, t he inter mittent wipe
logic circuitry m onit ors the wiper m otor t hrough t he
wiper on-off rela y out pu t circuit, wh ich allows it to
monitor t he number of wiper blade sweeps. After the
appropriate num ber of wiper sweeps th e in term ittent
wipe logic circuitry operat es the wiper m otor to
retu rn th e wipers to their par k posit ion, then de-en-
er gizes t h e wiper r ela y.
AUTOMATIC WIPE SYSTEM
When the ignit ion switch is in t he On position, bat -
tery current from a fuse in th e fuse block underneath
the st eering colum n is provided th rough a fused igni-
tion switch output (run-start) circu it to the rain sen-
sor control modu le u nder th e in st rument pan el, to
the ra in sensor within the base of the inside rear
view mirr or on the windshield, and to the mu lti-func-
tion switch. The inter nal cir cuitry of the mult i-fun c-
tion switch provides direct hard wired ba tter y
curren t out pu ts t o the rain sensor control module t o
indicate t he select ed wiper operating mode. The con -
trol modu le logic monitors the inputs from the multi-
function switch a s well a s from the rain sensor and
the wiper motor par k switch in order to provide th e
output s necessary to oper ate the wiper motor and the
washer pump motor a s r equested.
When the aut omatic wipe posit ion is selected with
the m ult i-funct ion swit ch control stalk, t he rain sen-
sor con trol m odu le logic circuitry responds by provid-
ing a n acknowledgment sweep of the wipers. The
rain sensor calculates the correct wiper speed a nd
wiper sweep inter vals requir ed to r emove the mois-
ture detected on the windshield glass and provides
this in pu t to the rain sensor con trol module. The con-
trol module then energizes and de-energizes the
wiper motor au tomat ically. The automa tic wipe logic
will also provide a wipe-after-wa sh feat ure to clear
washer flu id tha t is directed on to the windshield
wh en t h e wa sh er syst em is u t ilized.
When the Off position of the multi-fu nction switch
wiper contr ol st alk is selected, one of two event s is
possible. The event tha t will occu r depends upon the
position of t he wiper blades on th e win dshield at the
momen t that th e Off position is selected. If t he wiper
blades a re in the down position on th e windshield
when the Off position is select ed, t he park switch
that is integra l t o t he wiper mot or is closed to
ground, and the r ain sensor control module logic cir-
cuit de-en ergizes th e wiper mot or. If the wiper blades
are not in the down position at th e mom ent the Off
position is selected, the park switch is an open cir-
cuit. Th e con trol m odu le logic circuit dir ects ba tter y
curren t to the low speed brush of th e wiper motor,
which ca uses the wiper motor to continue ru nning
until the wiper blades are in the down position on
the windshield an d the park switch is aga in closed to
ground.
When the Wash position of th e con trol knob on the
right control st alk of t he multi-function swit ch is
selected with the wiper syst em turn ed Off, th e rain
sensor control module logic cir cuit ry oper ates the
wiper m otor in t he sam e manner as it does to provide
the au tomatic wipe mode operat ion. After t he state of
the wa sher switch cha nges to open the con trol mod-
ule m onitors t he wiper motor through th e wiper pa rk
switch sense circuit, which allows it to monitor the
number of wiper blade sweeps. After th e a ppropriat e
number of wiper sweeps th e con trol m odu le operates
the wiper motor to return the wipers to th eir par k
position , then de-energizes the wiper mot or.
OPERATING MODES
The componen ts of the wiper a nd wa sh er system
are designed to pr ovide th e following opera ting
modes:
• Automati c Wi pe Mode - On veh icles so
equipped, the internal circuitry of the multi-funct ion
switch , the rain sensor contr ol module and the r ain
sensor wor k in concert t o provide wiper system oper-
ation aut omatically wh enever moist ure is detect ed on
the windshield glass.
• Co n t in uo u s Wip e Mo d e - The two-speed wiper
motor, the internal cir cuitr y of the m ulti-function
switch , and th e wiper syst em logic ci r cuit s wor k in
concert to pr ovide two continuous wipe cycles, low
speed or high speed.
• In t e r m i tt e nt Wi p e Mo d e - On veh icles so
equipped, the internal circuitry of the multi-funct ion
switch , t he intermittent wipe circuitry of t he wiper,
turn signa ls and engin e st art cont rol module in the
fuse block, and the wiper relay work in con cert t o
pr ovide an inter mittent wipe mode with a single,
fixed delay interval.
• Pulse Wipe Mode - The int erna l cir cuitry of
the mu lti-funct ion switch and the wiper syst em logic
circuits work in con cert to provide a pulse wipe m ode
that will allow t he wiper motor to be opera ted for a
single, com plete wipe cycle.
• Wa s h e r M o d e -Whenthewashersystemis
activat ed wit h the multi-fu nction swit ch while the
wiper system is opera ting, wa sh er flu id will be dis-
pensed onto t he windshield glass through the washer
nozzles for as lon g a s t he wash er pump/m otor i s
en er gized.
• Wip e -Afte r-Wa s h Mo d e -Thewipersystem
logic circuitry provides a wipe-after-wa sh featu re. If
the wipers a re tur ned Off, this feature will oper ate
the wash er pum p/m otor and the wiper s for as long as
the washer system is activated, then pr ovide severa l
additional wipe cycles aft er th e washer system is
deactivated before pa rking the wiper blades near the
base of t he windshield.
