conditions.
Two wiper system s ar e a va ilable: the st a nda rd
intermittent wipe system, or an optional au tomatic
wipe system. The veh icle operator initia tes a ll wiper
and wa sh er system fun ctions with the mu lti-funct ion
switch wiper control sta lk th at ext ends from the
right side of the st eering column, ju st below the
st eering wh eel. Depr essing, raising, or pulling the
right control stalk of the multi-fu nction switch
selects the desired wiper system opera ting mode (Fig.
2). The wiper system allows the veh icle opera tor to
select from two continuou s wiper speeds, Hi or Lo,
eith er a fixed i n terval inter mit tent wipe mode or an
auto wipe m ode (a s t he veh icle is equipped), and a
pu lse wipe mode. Pushing the knob on th e end of th e
control stalk towards the steerin g colu mn activat es
the washer pum p/m otor, wh ich dispenses washer
fluid onto the win dshield glass through the wa sh er
nozzles.
The hard wired in pu ts to and outpu ts from the
wiper and wa sh er system components m ay be diag-
nosed and t est ed using conventional diagn ost ic tools
and met hods. Refer to the appropriate diagn ost ic
information. Refer t o t he owner ’s manual in the vehi-
cle glove box for mor e information on th e featu res
and operation of the wiper an d washer syst em.
INTERMITTENT WIPE SYSTEM
When the ignit ion switch is in t he On position, bat -
tery current from a fuse in th e fuse block underneath
the st eering colum n is provided th rough a fused igni-
tion swit ch output (run -st art) circuit to the intermit-
tent wipe logic cir cuitry of t he wiper, tu rn signa ls
and engine sta rt cont rol modu le wit hin t he fuse
block, the m ulti-funct ion switch , the wiper rela y and
the wiper mot or par k switch. Th e interna l circu itry
of the multi-fu nction switch pr ovides a direct ha rd
wired bat tery curren t out pu t to the low speed or high
speed brushes of t he wiper mot or when the Low,
High, or Pu lse position is selected, which causes th e
wipers to cycle at th e selected speed for as long as
that switch position rema ins selected.
In order to provide the intermittent wipe and wipe-
after-wash featu res, the in termittent wipe logic cir-
cuitry of the wiper, turn signa ls a nd en gin e sta rt
control module wit hin th e fuse block monitors inputs
from th e in term itten t wipe and washer switch cir-
cuitry of the mult i-fun ction swit ch and t he park
switch in t he wiper m otor. When the intermittent
wipe position is selected wit h th e mult i-function
switch con trol stalk, the inter mit tent wipe logic cir-
cuitry r espon ds by energizing th e wiper relay and
calcu lating t he correct delay interva l. The ener gized
wiper r elay direct s batt ery current through th e int er-
mittent wipe position cir cuitry of the multi-funct ion
switch to t he low speed brush of th e wiper motor.
The intermittent wipe logic circuit m onitors th e
wiper motor oper ation through t he wiper on /off relay
output circu it, which allows it to det ermine the
pr oper timing to begin the next wiper blade sweep.
The n ormal dela y in terval is about five seconds.
When the Off position of the multi-fu nction switch
wiper contr ol st alk is selected, one of two event s is
possible. The event tha t will occu r depends upon the
position of t he wiper blades on th e win dshield at the
momen t that th e Off position is selected. If t he wiper
blades a re in the down position on th e windshield
when the Off position is select ed, t he park switch
that is integra l t o t he wiper mot or is closed to
ground, the in term ittent wipe logic circuit de-ener-
gizes t he wiper relay, and the wiper motor ceases to
operat e.
If the wiper blades are not in th e down position on
the windshield at the moment the Off position is
selected, the park switch is closed to batt ery current
through t he fused ignition switch outpu t (run-start)
circuit. The inter mit tent wipe logic circuit ener gizes
the wiper relay an d the wiper on-off relay out pu t cir-
cuit dir ects batt ery cur rent to the low speed bru sh of
the wiper motor t hrough the nor mally open contact
of th e wiper relay, t hen t hrough th e in tern al Off posi-
tion cir cuit ry of the multi-fu nction switch. This
causes the wiper motor t o continue ru nning until th e
wiper blades are in the down position on the wind-
sh ield an d th e pa rk switch is again closed to ground.
When the Wash position of th e con trol knob on the
right control st alk of t he multi-function swit ch is
selected, th e wa sh er switch circuitry directs batt ery
curren t t o the wa sh er pump m otor and to the inter-
mittent wipe logic circuitry. When the wash er switch
