DESCRIPTION
The NAG1 automat ic transmission (Fig. 1) is an
electronica lly con trolled 5-speed tr ansmission with a
lock-up clut ch in the torque con vert er. The r atios for
the gear st ages a re obta ined by 3 plan etar y gea r sets.
Fifth gea r is designed as an overdrive with a high-
speed rat io.
NAG1 iden tifies a family of tra nsmissions and
mean s New A”u tomatic Gearbox, generation 1.
Var ious ma rketin g names are associat ed with the
NAG1 family of t ransm issions, depending on the
transmisson var iation being u sed in a specific vehi-
cle. Some exam ples of the marketing names a re:
W5A300, W5A380, a nd W5A580. The ma rketing
name can be interpret ed as follows:
W = A transmission using a h ydrau lic torque
conver ter.
5 = 5 forwar d gear s.
A = Automatic Tran sm ission.
580 = Ma xim um inpu t t orque capacit y in New-
ton met ers.
The gears are actuated electr onica lly/hydr aulically.
The gears ar e sh ifted by means of an appropriate
combin ation of th ree mu lti-disc holding clutches,
three multi-disc driving clutches, and t wo freewheel-
ing clutches.
Elect ronic t ransmission cont rol en ables pr ecise
adapta tion of pressures to th e respective opera tin g
conditions and to the engine out pu t dur ing the shift
ph ase wh ich results in a significant improvemen t in
sh ift qua lity.
Furthermore, it offers the advant age of a flexible
adapta tion to var ious vehicle and engines.
Basica lly, the au tomatic tran sm ission with elec-
tronic control offer s t he following a dvantages:
Redu ces fuel consum ption.
Improved shift com fort.
Mor e favoura ble step-up through t he five gears.
