LOW SPEED KNOCK
Low speed knock is gen erally ca used by a worn
U-joint or by worn side-gear thrust wa sh ers. A worn
pinion sh aft bore will also cau se low speed knock.
VIBRATION
Vibra tion at the rear of th e vehicle is usually
caused by a:
• Da maged drive sha ft.
• Missing drive sha ft bala nce weigh t(s).
• Worn or out-of-bala nce wh eels.
• Loose wheel lu g nu ts.
• Worn U-joint(s).
• Loose/broken sprin gs.
• Da maged axle shaft bear ing(s).
• Loose pinion gear nut.
• Excessive pin ion yoke ru n out.
• Bent axle shaft(s).
Check for loose or damaged front-end componen ts
or engine/tra nsmission mounts. These components
can con tribute to wh at a ppea rs to be a rear end vibra-
tion. Do n ot overlook engine accessories, br ackets
and drive belts.
NOTE: All driveline components should be exam-
ined before starting any repair.
DRIVELINE SNAP
A snap or clunk noise when t he veh icle is shifted
into gear (or th e clutch engaged), can be ca used by:
• High engine idle speed.
• Tra nsmission shift operation .
• Loose engine/t ransmission/transfer ca se moun ts.
• Worn U-joints.
• Loose spr ing moun ts.
• Loose pinion gear nut and yoke.
• Excessive ring gea r backlash.
• Excessive side gear t o case clearance.
The sou rce of a sn ap or a clun k noise can be det er-
mined wit h the a ssistan ce of a helper. Raise th e vehi-
cle on a h oist with the wheels free t o rotate. Instr uct
the helper to shift the transm ission into gear. Listen
for the noise, a mechan ics st ethoscope is helpful in
isolating th e source of a noise.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - DRAIN AND FILL
NOTE: Drain oil when warm.
(1) Clean area around oil fill plug and drain plu g.
(2) Remove oil dr ain plug (2) and drain oil (Fig. 1).
(3) In st all oil dr ain plug and tight en to N·m 100
(74 ft. lbs.).
(4) Remove oil fill plug (1) an d fill hou sing up to
bottom edge of oil fill hole (Fig. 1).
(5) In st all oil fill plug an d tight en to N·m 100 (74
ft. lbs.).
