DESCRIPTION
CAUTION: Do not attempt to check belt tension with
a belt tension gauge on vehicles equipped with an
automatic belt tensioner.
Drive belt s on all en gines are equipped with a
spring loaded au tomatic belt tensioner. This t en-
sioner maintains constant belt ten sion at all tim es
and requir es no ma int enan ce or adjustment. (F ig. 1)
OPERATION
WARNING: The automatic belt tensioner assembly
is spring loaded. do not attempt to disassemble the
tensioner assembly.
The aut omatic belt tensioner ma intains correct belt
tension using a coiled spring within th e ten sioner
housin g. Th e spring applies pressur e to th e tensioner
arm pressing the a rm int o the belt , tensionin g th e
belt .
If a new belt is bein g insta lled, th e arrow must be
with in approximately 3 mm (1/8 in . ) of indexing
mark. Belt is consider ed new if it has been used 15
minutes or less. If th is specificat ion cannot be met,
check for:
• Th e wrong belt being installed (incorrect lengt h/
widt h )
• Worn bear ings on an engine accessor y (A/C com -
pr essor, power steer ing pump, water pump, idler pul-
ley or generat or)
• A pulley on an engine a ccessory being loose
• Misalign ment of a n engine a ccessory
• Belt in correct ly r outed.

VISUAL DIAGNOSIS
When dia gnosing serpent ine accessor y drive belts,
sm all cracks th at r un across the ribbed surface of t he
belt from rib to r ib (Fig. 2), are consider ed normal.
These a re n ot a reason to replace t he belt. However,
cracks runn ing along a rib (not across) are not nor-
mal. Any belt with cr acks r unning along a rib m ust
be replaced (F ig. 2). Also r eplace the belt if it has
excessive wea r, fra yed cords or severe gla zing.
