CH I M E / BU Z Z ER
DESCRIPTION
A chime wa rning system is st andar d factory-in-
st alled equipm ent. The chime war ning system uses a
chime ton e gener ator an d a contactless relay that ar e
soldered onto the electronic cir cuit boa rd inside th e
Elect roMechanica l Instr ument Clu st er (EMIC) to
pr ovide audible in dications of var ious vehicle condi-
tions that may requir e the atten tion of the vehicle
operat or or occupants. The microprocessor-based
EMIC utilizes electr onic m essa ges received from
other modules in th e vehicle over th e Controller Area
Net work (CAN) data bu s n etwork a long with ha rd
wired input s to t he cluster to monitor ma ny sensor s
and swit ches throughou t the vehicle. In response t o
those in pu ts, the cir cuit ry an d in tern al program min g
of t he EMIC allow it t o con trol a udible outputs that
are produ ced t hrough its on-board chime tone gener-
ator and conta ctless relay.
The EMIC circuitry and it s ch ime tone gen erat or
are capable of producing the following audible ou t-
puts:
Single Chime Tone -Asingle,extended beep-
like chime t one is issued as a sea t belt remin der.
Fast Rate Repetitive Chime Tone -Repeated
beep-like tones th at are issu ed a t a fa st ra te as an
audible aler t an d to support va rious visua l wa rnings.
Slow Rate Repetitive Click Tone -Repeated
click-like tones tha t a re issued at a slow ra te to
emulate turn signa l an d h azard flash er operat ion.
Fast Rate Repetitive Click Tone -Repeated
click-like tones that ar e issued at a fa st r ate to
emulate turn signal flasher operation with a bulb
out.
Hard wired circuitr y conn ects the E MIC a nd the
var ious chime warn ing switch and sensor in pu ts to
their respective modu les and to ea ch other t hrough
the electr ical system of the vehicle. Th ese har d wired
circuits are i n tegral to the vehicle wire har ness,
which is rou ted throughou t t he vehicle and retained
by ma ny different met hods. These circuits m ay be
connect ed to each oth er, to the veh icle elect rical sys-
tem and to the EMIC t hrough the use of a combina-
tion of solder ed splices, splice block connect ors, a nd
many different types of wire harness termina l con-
nector s an d insulator s. Refer to the appropriate wir-
ing infor mation. Th e wiring information includes
wiring diagr ams, proper wire and connect or repa ir
pr ocedures, fu rther details on wire ha rness rou tin g
and r etention, a s well as pin-out and location views
for t he va rious wire ha rness connectors, splices and
grounds.
The EMIC chime ton e generator a nd con tact less
rela y ca nnot be adjusted or r epair ed. If the chime
tone generator or cont actless r elay are dam aged or
faulty, t he en tire E MIC unit must be repla ced.
OPERATION
The ch ime warning system componen ts opera te on
batt ery current received th rough a non-switch ed
fused B(+) circuit so th at t he syst em may opera te
rega rdless of th e ignition switch position . The Elec-
troMechanical In st rument Clust er (E MIC) also mon -
itors the ignit ion switch posit ion so tha t some chime
featu res will only occur with ignition switch in th e
On posit ion, while other s occur regardless of the ign i-
tion switch position.
The chim e wa rning syst em pr ovides an audible
indication t o the veh icle opera tor or occupants under
the following condit ions:
Engine Oil Level Low Warning - Each time
the ign ition switch is tur ned to the On position , the
EMIC chim e tone gener ator will gener ate a fast rate
repetitive chim e tone if electronic messages are
received over the Cont roller Ar ea Net work (CAN)
da ta bus fr om the Engine Cont rol Module (ECM)
indicating that the en gine level is too low. Th e ECM
uses internal programmin g a nd ha rd wired input s
from the engine oil level and tem perat ure sensor to
determ ine th e en gine oil level. This au dible warnin g
occurs in concer t wit h the visu al wa rnin g provided by
the m ult i-funct ion in dicator in the cluster.
Fasten Seat Belt Reminder - Each time th e
ign ition switch is t urned to the On posit ion, the
EMIC chime ton e generat or will gener ate a single
extended chime t one for a dur ation of about six sec-
onds, or until th e dr iver side fr ont seat belt is fas-
tened, which ever occurs first. Th e EMIC uses
internal programmin g and a h ard wired input from
the driver side front sea t belt switch to det ermine
