pr edefined gear, t here are severa l shift perform ance
concern s. For insta nce, if th e transmission is slip-
ping, th e cont roller tr ies to place th e tr ansmission
into 3rd gear and maint ain 3r d gear for all forwar d
dr ive conditions.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - TCM ADAPTATION
The a da ptation procedu re requires the use of the
appropriate scan t ool. This progr am allows t he elec-
tronic tr ansmission system to re-calibr ate itself. This
will provide the proper baseline transmission oper a-
tion. The adaptation procedu re should be perform ed
if any of t he followin g procedu res are perform ed:
• Tra nsmission Assembly Replacement
• Tra nsmission Contr ol Module Replacement
• Clutch Plat e and/or Sea l Replacement
• Electrohydr aulic Un it Replacem ent or Recondi-
tion
(1) With t he scan tool, reset the Transmission
adaptives. Resetting the adaptives will set the adap-
tives to fa ctory settings.
NOTE: Perform the Coast Down Adaptations first.
The Transmission Temperature must be greater
than 60°C (140°F) and less than 70°C (158°F). Fail-
ure to stay within these temperature ranges will
void the procedure.
(2) Drive the vehicle un til the tra nsmission tem-
perat ure is in th e specified ran ge.
(3) Perfor m 4 t o 5 coast downs fr om 5th to 4th
gear and the n 4 th to 3rd ge ar.
NOTE: For Upshift adaptation, the Transmission
temperature must be greater than 60°C (140°F) and
less than 100°C (212°F). Failure to stay within these
temperature ranges will void this procedure.
(4) From a stop, moder ately accelera te the vehicle
and obt ain all forward gear ranges wh ile keeping th e
Engine RPM below 1800 RP M. Repeat this pr ocedure
4to5times.
(5) Obtainin g 5th gear may be difficult a t 1800
RPM. Allow the transmission to sh ift int o 5th gea r at
a higher RPM t hen lower the RP M to 1800 and per-
form ma nua l sh ifts between 4th and 5th gears usin g
the sh ift lever.
(6) The TCM will store the adaptives every 10
minutes. After completion of the adaptation proce-
du re make sur e the vehicle sta ys runn ing for at least
10 m in u t es.
(7) It is possible to man ually store the adapt ives
under the 10 minute time fr ame usin g the DRBIII!
St ore Adaptives procedure.
