INDICATORS
In dicators a re loca ted in va rious positions wit hin
the EMIC an d are all connected to the EMIC elec-
tronic cir cuit boa rd. The am bien t tem perat ure indica-
tor (optional), brake indica tor, brake wear in dicator,
charging indica tor, coola nt low indicator, high bea m
indicator, low fuel indicator, par k bra ke indica tor,
seatbelt in dicator, tu rn signa l indica tors, a nd wash er
fluid indicator oper ate based upon hard wired input s
to the E MIC. The airbag (SRS) indica tor is normally
controlled by a ha rd wired input from the Air bag
Contr ol Modu le (ACM); however, if the EMIC sees an
abnor mal or n o input from the ACM, it will aut omat-
ically turn the airba g in dicator On un til the har d
wired in pu t from the ACM has been rest ored. The
Malfu nction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is nor mally con-
trolled by CAN data bus messages from the Engine
Contr ol Module (ECM); however, if t he EMIC loses
CAN da ta bus com munication, the EMIC circuitry
will automatically turn the MIL on u ntil CAN data
bus comm unication is rest ored. Th e EMIC uses CAN
da ta bus messages from th e ECM, th e ACM, a nd the
Contr oller An tilock Brake t o control all of th e
rema ining indicator s.
The va rious EMIC indica tors are controlled by dif-
ferent strategies; some r eceive battery feed from th e
EMIC circuitry and have a switched ground, wh ile
other s are grounded th rough the EMIC cir cuitr y a nd
have a switched batt ery feed. However, all indica tors
are complet ely contr olled by the E MIC microproces-
sor ba sed upon various har d wired an d electr onic
message input s. E xcept for t he indications provided
by t he m ulti-funct ion indicator Liquid Crystal Dis-
play (LCD) un it, all in dicators are illuminated a t a
fixed intensit y, which is not affect ed by t he selected
illumination in tensity of the EMIC general illum ina-
tion lamps.
The ha rd wired in dicator input s ma y be diagnosed
using convent ional diagnostic methods. However,
pr oper testing of the EMIC circu itr y a nd th e CAN
bus message controlled indicator s r equires th e use of
a dia gnostic sca n tool. Refer to the appropr iate diag-
nostic information. Specific details of the opera tion
for ea ch in dicator ma y be found elsewher e in this
service in formation.
CLUSTER ILLUMINATION
The E MIC ha s several genera l illuminat ion lamps
that ar e illu min ated when the exterior ligh tin g is
turned on with the multi-fu nction swit ch. Th e illum i-
nation in tensity of t hese lamps is a djusted by a dim -
ming level input received from the multi-function
indicator “+” (plus) and “–” (minus) switch pu sh but -
tons th at exten d thr ough the lower edge of the clus-
ter lens below the right end of the multi-fu nction
indicator. Wh en the exterior lighting is tur ned Off,
the display is illuminated at maximum brightness.
When the ext erior ligh ting is turned On a nd the
transmission gear selector is in t he Par k position,
depr essing the plus swit ch pu sh button brightens the
display lighting, an d depressing t he m inus switch
pu sh button dims t he display lighting. The EMIC
also provides a Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) pa nel
lam ps dimmer output th at ca n be used to synchro-
nize the illuminat ion lighting levels of ext erna l illu-
mination lamps (up to abou t 23 to 30 watts) wit h
that of the E MIC.
The hard wired multi-fu nction switch input an d
the E MIC pan el lamps dimmer out pu t m ay be dia g-
nosed u sing conventional diagnostic meth ods. How-
ever, proper testin g of the P WM cont rol of t he EMIC
and the electron ic dimming level in pu ts fr om th e
multi-fu nction indica tor push buttons requ ires the
use of a dia gnostic scan tool. Refer to the appropr iate
diagnostic informat ion.
