PASSIVE RESTRAINTS
A Next Generation driver airba g is standar d facto-
ry-insta lled safet y equ ipmen t on this model, while a
pa ssen ger side fron t a irba g and side cur tain a irba gs
are optional. This airba g syst em is a passive, inflat-
able, Supplem enta l Restrain t System (SRS) an d veh i-
cles with this equipment can be rea dily identified by
the “SRS - AIRBAG” logo molded into th e driver air-
bag tr im cover in th e cen ter of th e steerin g wheel
and, if the vehicle is so equ ipped, also into the pa s-
senger airba g door on th e instru ment panel above
the glove box (Fig. 2). Vehicles with t he airba g sys-
tem can also be identified by th e airba g indica tor,
which will illu minate in the instr umen t cluster for
about six seconds as a bulb test each time the ign i-
tion switch is tu rned to the On position . A pyr otech-
nic-type sea t belt tensioner is in tegral to th e fron t
seat belt ret ract or mounted on th e lower B-pilla r on
the driver side, a nd to the passenger side ret ractor of
vehicles equipped with t he opt ional passenger side
airbag.
The supplement al r est raint system includes the
following major components, which are descr ibed in
further detail elsewher e in this service information:
• Ai r bag C ontr ol Modul e - The Airba g Control
Module (ACM) is located on a moun t on the floor
panel with in the driver side seat r iser, beneath the
dr iver sea t in the pa ssen ger compa rtment.
• Ai r bag (SRS) I ndi cator - The airba g indicator
is integral to th e E lectr oMechan ical Instrument Clus-
ter (E MIC), which is locat ed on th e in st rument pa nel
in front of the driver.
• Clo c k s p ri n g - The clockspring is located nea r
the top of th e steerin g colu mn, direct ly benea th the
steer in g wheel.
• Driver Airbag - The driver airba g is locat ed in
the cent er of th e steerin g wheel, ben eath the driver
air bag t rim cover.
• Driver Knee Blocker - The stru cture of the
lower instrument pa nel serves as a knee blocker for
the driver.
• Passenger Airbag - Th e optional passenger air-
bag is locat ed with in the instr umen t pan el, behin d
the passenger airbag door on th e instr umen t pan el
above the glove box on t he passenger side of the vehi-
cle.
• Passenger Knee Blocker - The str ucture of
the glove box door and the lower instru ment pa nel
serve as a kn ee blocker for the front sea t passen ger.
• Seat Belt Tensioner - A seat belt t ension er is
integra l to the driver side fr ont seat belt retractor
unit, and to the pa ssen ger side front sea t belt ret rac-
tor unit on vehicles equipped with an optional pa s-
senger a ir bag.
• Side Curtain Airbags - Optional side curtain
air bags are ava ila ble for this model wh en it is also
equipped with dual fr ont air bags. In veh icles
equipped with t his option, a side cu rtain airbag is
locat ed on th e inside of th e roof side r ail within a
gar nish molding tha t extends fr om the A-pillar t o t he
B-pillar above ea ch front door open ing within the
pa ssen ger compa rtment of th e veh icle.
• Side Impact Sensor - Two side im pa ct sen sor s
are used on vehicles equ ipped with the option al side
curtain airbags, one on each side of t he vehicle. One
sensor is loca ted near the front of ea ch front door
st ep well, concea led beh ind the step well t rim .
The ACM conta ins a centr al processin g unit and
pr ogrammin g that allows it to com municate on a
seria l dat a bus diagn ost ic circu it connected to t he
16-way Data Link Con nector (DLC) located below the
left end of the instrument pa nel. This meth od of com-
munication is used for init ialization of the ACM and
for diagnosis of th e SRS circuits and components
using a dia gnostic scan tool.
Hard wired circu itry conn ects the supplemental
restraint syst em component s t o each oth er throu gh
the electr ical system of the vehicle. Th ese har d wired
circuits ar e int egra l to several wir e har nesses, wh ich
are routed throu ghou t the vehicle and retained by
many different met hods. These circuits may be con-
nected to each other, t o the veh icle electrical system ,
