Chapter 8: Audio Module, Rev 1.1
8.2.1.3 Outdoor Microphone Assembly
The outdoor microphone (which includes an integrated audio test source or buzzer) is supplied
with an outdoor grade wiring junction box. It is the installer’s responsibility to create an adequate
mounting system or bracket when mounting the junction box outdoors. Figure 8-5 - External
(outdoor) Microphone and Junction Box illustrates the microphone and junction box.

Audio coverage from the external microphone is uni-directional. Therefore, the assembly should
be mounted in a protected location where the coverage range from the front of the microphone
includes the area to be recorded. Sounds from behind the microphone will not be covered.
NOTE: To minimize exposure to sea spray and rain, it is recommended that the unit be mounted
under the wing control cover if possible, and wherever possible the microphone should be facing
down.
8.2.2 Mounting the Audio Module
Note: The Audio Module, when installed without a DAU must be grounded to the
ship’s hull.
