repaired a nd, if faulty or dam aged, it must be
repla ced.
OPERATION
The power outlet ba se or recept acle shell is con-
nected to ground, and an in su lated contact in the
bottom of th e shell is connected to battery current.
The power outlet r eceives batt ery volt age from a fuse
in the fuse block a t all tim es.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - POWER OUTLET
(1) Check for batt ery voltage at t he fused B(+) fu se
in t he fuse block. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK,
repair t he open fused B(+) circuit t o the battery as
required.
(2) Check for cont inu ity between the in side cir-
cumfer ence of the power outlet receptacle an d a good
ground. Ther e should be contin uit y. If OK, go t o St ep
3. If not OK, go t o Step 4.
(3) Check for ba tter y voltage at t he in su lat ed con -
tact loca ted at the back of the power out let recept a-
cle. If n ot OK, go t o Step 4.
(4) Disconn ect and isolate the battery nega tive
cable. Check for cont inuity between the ground cir-
cuit cavity of t he power outlet wire harness connector
and a good ground. There should be con tinu ity. If
OK, go to Step 5. If not OK, repa ir th e open ground
circuit to groun d a s required.
(5) Connect the ba tter y negat ive ca ble. Check for
batt ery volt age a t the fused B(+) cir cuit cavit y of the
power ou tlet wir e h arness connect or. If OK, replace
the fault y power outlet receptacle. If not OK, repa ir
the open fused B(+) circuit to the fuse in the fuse
block as requ ired.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconn ect and isolate the battery nega tive
cable.
(2) Pull t he cigar lighter knob and element ou t of
the cigar ligh ter recept acle ba se, or unsnap the pro-
tective ca p from the power outlet recept acle base.
(3) Look inside the cigar lighter or power outlet
recepta cle base an d not e the position of th e rectan gu-
lar ret aining bosses of the mou nt t hat secures the
recepta cle ba se to the in strument panel.
(4) In sert a pair of exter nal sna p ring pliers into
the ciga r light er or power out let receptacle ba se and
enga ge th e tips of the pliers with the retainin g
bosses of the moun t.
(5) Squeeze the pliers t o disengage the mount
reta ining bosses from th e r eceptacle base an d, using
a g entle rocking motion, pull t he pliers an d the
recepta cle ba se out of th e mount.
(6) Disconn ect the instr umen t pa nel wir e har ness
connect or from the connect or recepta cle of the ciga r
lighter or the power outlet recept acle base.
(7) Remove the cigar lighter or power outlet moun t
from the inst rument panel.
INSTALLATION
(1) In st all t he ciga r ligh ter or power ou tlet moun t
into t he ins trument p ane l.
(2) Reconnect the instr umen t panel wire har ness
connect or t o the connect or r eceptacle of t he cigar
lighter or the power outlet recept acle base.
(3) Align th e splin es on the outside of the ciga r
lighter or power outlet receptacle ba se connect or
recepta cle with the grooves on the inside of th e
mount.
(4) Press firmly on the cigar lighter or power out-
let receptacle base until th e r etaining bosses of t he
mount are fully engaged in their recept acles.
(5) In st all the cigar ligh ter knob a nd element into
the ciga r lighter r eceptacle ba se.
(6) Reconnect t he battery negative cable.
RELAY
DESCRIPTION
A relay (F ig. 1) is an electromechanical device that
switch es fused batt ery current to a electrical compo-
nent when th e ignition switch is t urned to the Acces-
sor y or Run posit ions, or when controlled by a
electronic module. Th e relays are located in t he fu se
block.
The rela y is a Interna tion al Stan da rds Organiza-
tion (ISO) relay. Relays con forming to the ISO speci-
ficat ions h ave common physical dim ension s, cur rent
capacities, ter mina l pa tterns, an d term inal fun ctions.
