(19) Fill the cooin g system with proper coolant , to
the proper level (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ENGINE /
COOLANT - STANDARD P ROCEDURE).
(20) Connect n egat ive batt ery cable.
WARNING: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN THE
ENGINE IS OPERATING. DO NOT STAND IN A
DIRECT LINE WITH THE FAN. DO NOT PUT YOUR
HANDS NEAR THE PULLEYS, BELTS, OR FAN. DO
NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHES.
WARNING: (Refer to 14 - FUEL SYSTEM - WARN-
ING).
(21) Star t the en gin e and inspect for lea ks.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - PISTON RING FIT-
TING
(1) Carefully clean t he carbon from all ring
grooves. Oil drain openings in the oil ring groove and
pin boss must be clear. DO NOT r emove met al from
the grooves or lan ds. This will cha nge ring-to-groove
clear ances a nd will damage the rin g-to-land sea ting.
(2) Be sure the piston ring grooves are fr ee of
nicks and bu rrs.
(3) Measur e the ring side clearance with a feeler
gau ge fitted snugly between th e ring land and r ing
(Fig. 43). Rot ate t he ring in th e groove. It must move
freely around circum ference of the groove.

(4) Pla ce ring in the cylinder bore an d push down
with inverted pist on t o position near lower end of t he
ring travel. Measur e ring ga p with a feeler gauge fit-
ting snugly between ring ends (Fig. 44).

(5) The oil cont rol rings are symmetrical, and can
be insta lled with either side up. It is not necessar y to
use a tool to in st all the upper a nd lower ra ils. In ser t

rings with man ufact ures design ation pointing toward
piston crown (F ig. 45).
