(5) Remove the belt pu lley/vibration damper (F ig.
47).
NOTE: If grooves can be felt in the belt pulley/vibra-
tion damper during inspection, the pulley/damper
must be replaced.
(6) In spect hub at belt pu lley/vibration damper for
wear grooves.
(7) Replace front cr ankshaft sea l.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Align parallel key, fix in place with grease.
Turn to ensure the slot is aligned with parallel key
in crankshaft.
NOTE: Front crankshaft seal must be replaced
before installing the belt pulley/vibration damper.
(1) Position the belt pulley/vibration damper.
(2) In st all crankshaft center bolt an d wa sh er.
Tighten bolt in t wo stages. M8.8 bolt to 200N·m (148
lbs. ft .) th en 90°, M10.9 bolt t o 325N·m (240 lbs. ft.)
then 90°.
(3) Remove th e ret aining lock for the cra nksh aft/
ring gea r (Fig. 47).
NOTE: Inspect accessory drive belt for wear.
Replace as necessary.
(4) In st all a ccessor y dr ive belt (Refer to7-COOL-
ING/ACCE SSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - INSTAL-
LATION).
(5) In st all the a dditional A/C compressor drive belt
(if equ ipped).
(6) In st all th e coola nt module (if equipped with the
additional A/C compressor).
(7) Reconnect n egat ive batt ery cable.
WARNING: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN THE
ENGINE IS IN OPERATION. DO NOT STAND IN A
DIRECT LINE WITH THE FAN. DO NOT PUT YOUR
HANDS NEAR THE PULLEYS, BELTS OR FAN. DO
NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING.
(8) St art vehicle and inspect for leaks.
VACUUM P UMP
DESCRIPTION
The vacuum pump is opera ted by a slotted exten -
sion att ached t o th e vacuum pump sh aft. Th e va c-
uum pu mp shaft slotted exten sion fits into, an d is
dr iven by, th e exhaust camshaft gear.
The vacuum pump is a constant displa cement ,
van e-type pump. Vacuum is gener ated by vanes
mounted in the pump r otor. Th e rotor is located in
the pump housing a nd is pressed onto the pu mp
sh aft.
The va cuum pump rotatin g componen ts are in ter-
nally lubrica ted.
The vacu um pump is not ser vicea ble an d must be
repla ced as a unit . Do not disassemble or at tempt to
repair the pump.
OPERATION
Vacu um pump output is tr ansmitted to the Hea ter,
Elect ronic, Vacuum, Air Condition er (HEVAC) and
speed con trol, system s through a supply hose. Th e
hose is connected to an out let port on the pump hou s-
ing an d uses a n in-line check va lve to reta in syst em
vacu um when vehicle is not runnin g.
Pump output ranges from a minimum of 8.5 t o 25
inches vacu um.
The pum p rotor and van es are rotat ed by the pum p
dr ive gea r. The drive gear is oper ated by the exh aust
camsha ft gear.
