DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - OUTER TIE ROD

NOTE: If the outer tie rod end is equipped with a
lubrication fitting, grease the joint then road test
the vehicle before performing test.
(1) Raise the front of t he vehicle. Place safety floor
st ands under both lower con trol arms as fa r outboard
as possible. Lower the vehicle to a llow the stands to
su pport some or all of the veh icle weight.
(2) Remove the front tires.
(3) Mount a dial indicator solidly to the veh icle
st eering knu ckle and then zer o the dial indicator.
(4) Position in dicator plunger on th e topside of t he
outer t ie rod end.
NOTE: The dial indicator plunger must be perpen-
dicular to the machined surface of the outer tie rod
end.
(5) Position a pr y ba r in or der to pry downwa rds
on the ou ter tie rod en d.
(6) If the tr avel exceeds 0.5 mm (0.020 in.), replace
the ou ter tie rod end (Refer to 19 - STEERING/
LINKAGE/TIE ROD E ND - REMOVAL).
(7) If the outer tie rod end is with in specs reinstall
the fron t tires (Refer to 22 - TIRES/WH EELS/
WHEELS - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
