DESCRIPTION
CAUTION: Use approved fluid only in the power
steering system (Refer to LUBRICATION & MAINTE-
NANCE/FLUID TYPES - DESCRIPTION). No other
power steering or automatic transmission fluid is to
be used in the system. Damage may result to the
power steering pump and system if any other fluid
is used, and do not overfill.
The pu mp is con nected to the steerin g gear via t he
pr essu re hose and the retur n h ose. Th e pump sha ft
has a pressed-on pulley th at is belt driven by th e
crankshaft pulley.
All vehicles are equipped with a power steerin g
fluid cooler.
NOTE: Power steering pumps are not interchange-
able with pumps installed on other vehicles.
OPERATION
Hydra ulic pressur e is provided for the power steer-
ing gear by the belt dr iven power steering pump. The
power steering pumps a re consta nt flow ra te an d dis-
placem ent, vane-type pu mps.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - PUMP LEAKAGE
The pu mp is serviced a s an assembly an d should
not be disassembled. The plastic pu mp r eservoir and
the r eservoir o-rings ca n be replaced.
Check for leaks in the following area s:
• Pump shaft seal behind the pulley
• Pump t o reservoir O-ring
• Reservoir cap
• Pressure and return lines
• Flow con trol valve fitting

STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWER STEERING
PUMP - INITIAL OPERATION
WARNING: THE FLUID LEVEL SHOULD BE
CHECKED WITH ENGINE OFF TO PREVENT INJURY
FROM MOVING COMPONENTS.

Wipe filler cap clea n, then check the fluid level.
The dipst ick should in dicate COLD when the fluid is
at normal t empera tur e.
(1) Turn steering wheel all th e way to t he left
