(4) Slowly t urn the steerin g wheel lock-to-lock 20
times with t he en gin e off wh ile checking th e flu id
leve l.
NOTE: For vehicles with long return lines or oil
coolers turn wheel 40 times.
(5) St art t he engine. With the engine idling ma in-
tain the fluid level.
(6) Lower th e fron t wheels an d let t he en gine idle
for two minut es.
(7) Turn the steerin g wheel in both direct ion an d
verify power assist and qu iet opera tion of t he pum p.
If the fluid is extrem ely foamy or m ilky looking,
allow the vehicle to stan d a few minutes and repeat
the pr ocedu re.
CAUTION: Do not run a vehicle with foamy fluid for
an extended period. This may cause pump damage.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - FLUSHING POWER
STEERING SYSTEM
Flushing is required when the power st eering/h y-
dr aulic booster system fluid h as become contam i-
nated. Conta min ated fluid in th e steer ing/booster
system can cause sea l deterioration and affect steer-
ing gea r/booster spool valve operation.
(1) Raise th e front end of the vehicle off the
ground unt il t he wheels ar e free t o tur n.
(2) Remove the retu rn line from the pum p.
NOTE: If vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic
booster remove both return lines from the pump.
(3) Plug the retu rn line port /por ts at th e pump.
(4) Position the return lin e/lin es into a lar ge con-
tainer to catch th e fluid.
(5) While a n assista nt is filling the pu mp reservoir
star t the engine.
(6) With the engine run nin g at idle t urn the wheel
back and fort h.
NOTE: Do not contact or hold the wheel against the
steering stops.
(7) Run a qua rt of fluid throu gh the system then
st op t he en gine and install the ret urn line/lin es.
(8) Fill th e system with flu id and perform Steerin g
Pump Init ial Operation, (Refer to 19 - STEERING/
PUMP - STANDARD P ROCEDURE).
(9) St art th e engine a nd run it for fift een min utes
then stop the engine.
(10) Remove the retur n line/lin es from the pu mp
and plu g th e pump port/por ts.
(11) Pour fresh fluid into th e reservoir an d check
the draining flu id for contam ination. If the fluid is
st ill contamin ated, t hen flu sh the system aga in.
(12) Install the ret urn line/lines an d perfor m
St eering Pump Initia l Oper ation, (Refer to 19 -
STEERING/PUMP - STANDARD PROCE DURE).
REMOVAL
(1) Remove th e belt from the power steerin g pump.
(2) Siphon as mu ch power st eering fluid as possi-
ble ou t of the reservoir.
(3) Remove t he high pressu re power steerin g hose
at the pu mp (Fig. 1).
(4) Remove the r etur n hose from the pump (F ig.
1).
(5) Remove the bolts secu ring th e power steering
pu mp to t he engine (Fig. 1).
INSTALLATION
(1) In st all t he power st eering pum p to the engine
and tight en th e bolts (Fig. 1). Tighten to 21 N·m (15
ft. lbs.).
(2) Replace all o-rings and hose clamps (Fig. 1).
(3) In st all t he return hose to t he pump and tight en
the clamp (F ig. 1).
(4) In st all th e high pr essu re h ose to t he pum p
(Fig. 1). Tighten to 38 N·m (28 ft. lbs.).
(5) Fill the power st eering fluid (Refer t o 19 -
STEERING/PUMP/FLUID - STANDARD P ROCE-
DURE ).
