INSTALLATION
Check conver ter hub and dr ive fla ts for sharp
edges, burrs, scra tches, or nicks. Polish t he h ub and
flat s with 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth if neces-
sa ry. The h ub mu st be smooth to a void dam aging the
pu mp seal at in st allation.
(1) Lubricate oil pum p sea l lip with tr ansmission
fluid.
(2)
Pla ce t orque convert er in position on transmission.
CAUTION: Do not damage oil pump seal or con-
verter hub while inserting torque converter into the
front of the transmission.
(3) Align torque converter t o oil pump seal open-
ing.
(4) In sert torque converter hub into oil pump.
(5) While pu shing torque conver ter inward, rotate
conver ter un til conver ter is fully seated in the oil
pump gear s.
(6) Check conver ter seat ing with a scale a nd
st raight edge (Fig. 251). Surface of converter lugs
sh ould be at least 19 mm (3/4 in.) t o rear of str aight-
edge wh en converter is fully sea ted.
(7) If necessary, t emporarily secu re convert er wit h
C-clam p a tta ched to t he converter h ousing.
(8) In st all the tra nsmission in the vehicle.
(9) Fill the tra nsmission with the recom mended
fluid.
TORQUE CONVERTER HUB
SEAL
REMOVAL
(1) Remove t he torque converter (Refer to 21 -
TRANSMISSION/AUTOMATIC - NAG1/TORQUE
CONVE RTER - REMOVAL).
(2) Remove th e torque con vert er h ub sea l with
su itable screw and slide ha mmer.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position the torque converter hu b sea l (1) (Fig.
252) over t he inpu t sha ft and against the transmis-
sion oil pump.
(2) Usin g Sea l In st aller 8902A (2) (Fig. 253),
insta ll a new torque con vert er hub seal.
(3) In st all the torque converter (Refer to 21 -
TRANSMISSION/AUTOMATIC - NAG1/TORQUE
CONVE RTER - INSTALLATION).
