mounting bra ckets, or a loose compressor clut ch
assembly.
Drive belts are speed sen sitive. At different en gine
speeds a nd dependin g u pon belt ten sion, belt s can
develop noises th at are m istaken for a compressor
noise. Improper belt t ension can cause a mislea ding
noise wh en the compressor clu tch is engaged, which
may n ot occur when t he compr essor clut ch is disen-
gaged. Ch eck the serpen tin e drive belt con dition a nd
tension a s described in Coolin g before beginning this
pr ocedure.
(1) Select a quiet a rea for t est ing. Duplicat e t he
complaint condition s as much a s possible. Switch t he
compressor on a nd off severa l times to clearly iden-
tify t he compressor noise. List en to t he compressor
while the clutch is engaged and disengaged. Probe
the compressor with an en gin e stethoscope or a long
scr ewdriver with the ha ndle held to you r ear to bet-
ter loca lize th e source of the noise.
(2) Loosen all of t he com pr essor mount ing hard-
ware and ret igh ten. Tighten the compressor clutch
mounting nu t. Be certain tha t the clutch coil is
mounted securely to the com pr essor, and t hat the
clutch plat e an d pu lley ar e properly aligned a nd ha ve
the correct air gap. (Refer to 24 - H EATING & AIR
CONDITIONING/CONTROLS/A/C COMPRESSOR
CLUTCH - INSTALLATION)
(3) To duplicat e a high-a mbien t tem perature condi-
tion (high head pressure), restrict th e air flow
through th e condenser. Insta ll a manifold ga uge set
to be certa in that the discha rge pressure does not
exceed 2760 kPa (400 psi).
(4) Check t he refrigerant system plumbing for
incorrect routing, r ubbing or int erferen ce, which can
cause unu su al n oises. Also ch eck the refr iger ant lines
for kinks or sh arp ben ds t hat will restrict r efrigera nt
flow, which ca n ca use n oises. (Refer to 24 - HEAT-
ING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING - CAU-
TION - REF RIGERANT HOSES/LINES/TUBES
PRECAUTIONS)
(5) If t he noise is fr om opening a nd closing of the
high pressure relief valve, r eclaim, evacu ate, and
recha rge th e refrigera nt system. (Refer to 24 - HE AT-
ING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING - STAN-
DARD PROCEDURE - RE FRIGERANT RECOVERY)
(Refer to 24 - HE ATING & AIR CONDITIONING/
PLUMBING - STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIG-
ERANT SYSTEM EVACUATE) (Refer t o 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGE RANT SYS-
TEM CHARGE) If th e high pressur e relief va lve st ill
does not seat proper ly, r eplace the a/c compressor.
(Refer to 24 - HE ATING & AIR CONDITIONING/
PLUMBING/A/C COMPRE SSOR - REMOVAL)
(6) If the noise is from liqu id slugging on the suc-
tion lin e, check th e refr igerant oil level and th e
refriger ant system cha rge. (Refer to 24 - H EATING
& AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING/REFRIGER-
ANT OIL - STANDARD PROCEDURE) (Refer to 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
SP ECIFICATIONS - CHARGE CAPACITY).
(7) If the noise continues, replace t he compressor
and repeat Step 1.

WARNING: Refer to the applicable warnings and
cautions for this system before performing the fol-
lowing operation (Refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR
CONDITIONING/PLUMBING - WARNINGS) and (Refer
to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
CAUTIONS). Failure to follow the warnings and cau-
tions could result in possible personal injury or
death.
NOTE: The A/C compressor may be removed and
repositioned without disconnecting the refrigerant
lines or discharging the refrigerant system. Dis-
charging is not necessary if servicing the compres-
sor clutch, clutch coil or the engine.
NOTE: If an internal failure of the A/C compressor
has occurred, the receiver/drier must be replaced.
(1) Disconn ect and isolate the negat ive ba tter y
cable.
(2) Recover th e refriger ant from th e refriger ant
system (Refer t o 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDITION-
ING/PLUMBING - STANDARD PROCE DURE -
REFRIGERANT SYSTEM RECOVE RY).
(3) Remove t he serpentine drive belt (Refer to 7 -
COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/BELTS-DRIVE -
REMOVAL).
(4) Disconn ect the wire ha rness connector from th e
A/C compressor clutch coil.
(5) Remove the bolts t hat secu re t he A/C suct ion
and disch arge lines to the A/C compressor.
(6) Disconn ect the A/C su ction an d discharge lines
from t he A/C compressor and r emove and discard the
O-rin g seals (Fig. 4).
(7) In st all plugs in , or tape over the open ed refrig-
eran t line fitt ings and the compressor ports.
(8) Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
(9) If equipped with an add-on rea r A/C system,
remove the lower A/C com pr essor an d position it out
of the way (Refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDI-
TIONING/PLUMBING/A/C COMPRE SSOR -
REMOVAL - DENSO 10S17).
(10) Support the A/C compressor and rem ove the
compressor mou ntin g bolts.
(11) Remove t he A/C compressor from the engine
compart ment .
