• Th e upper bolt at the front of t he compr essor.
• Th e lower bolt at t he fron t of the compressor.
• Th e bolt a t the r ear of th e compressor.
(2) If equipped with an add-on rea r A/C system,
insta ll the lower A/C compressor (Refer to 24 - HE AT-
ING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING/A/C COM-
PRESSOR - INSTALLATION - DENSO 10S17).
(3) Lower th e vehicle.
(4) Remove the ta pe or plu gs fr om the opened suc-
tion line fitting and the discharge line fit tin g a nd the
compressor ports.
(5) Lubricate new rubber O-r ing seals wit h clea n
refriger ant oil and install them onto t he suct ion and
the discharge line fittings. Use only the specified
O-rin gs as they ar e m ade of a special material for t he
R-134a system. Use on ly refrigerant oil of th e type
recomm ended for the A/C compressor in the vehicle.
(6) Connect the A/C suction and discharge lines to
the A/C compressor.
(7) In st all the bolt s t hat secu re th e A/C su ction
and discha rge lines to the A/C compressor. Tighten
the bolts t o 23 N·m (17 ft. lbs.).
(8) Connect the wir e ha rness conn ector to the A/C
compressor clu tch coil.
(9) In st all the accessor y drive belt (Refer to 7 -
COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BEL TS -
INSTALLATION).
(10) Repla ce th e receiver/drier if t he A/C compres-
sor is being r eplaced due t o an inter nal failure (Refer
to 24 - H EATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMB-
ING/RE CEIVER/DRIE R - RE MOVAL) and (Refer to
24 - HE ATING & AIR CONDITIONING/P LUMBING/
RECEIVE R/DRIER - INSTALLATION).
(11) Reconnect t he negat ive batt ery cable.
(12) Eva cuat e the refr iger ant system (Refer to 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGE RANT SYS-
TEM EVACUATE).
(13) Charge th e refrigerant system (Refer to 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGE RANT SYS-
TEM CH ARGE).
DENSO 10S17A/CCOMPRESSOR
NOTE: Be certain to check the refrigerant oil level if
the A/C compressor is being replaced. See Refriger-
ant Oil Level in this group for the procedures. Use
only refrigerant oil of the type recommended for the
A/C compressor in the vehicle.
NOTE: If an internal failure of the A/C compressor
has occurred, the receiver/drier must be replaced.
(1) Position the A/C compressor in the engine com-
pa rtmen t and loosely install the thr ee com pr essor
reta ining bolts. Tighten th e bolts using the following
sequence to 20 N·m (14 ft. lbs.).
• Th e upper bolt at the front of t he compr essor.
• Th e lower bolt at t he fron t of the compressor.
• Th e bolt a t the r ear of th e compressor.
(2) Remove the tape or plugs from the opened
underbody suction a nd disch arge line fit tings and
compressor ports.
(3) Lubricate new rubber O-r ing seals wit h clea n
refriger ant oil and install them onto t he suct ion and
the discharge line fittings. Use only the specified
O-rin gs as they ar e m ade of a special material for t he
R-134a system. Use on ly refrigerant oil of th e type
recomm ended for the A/C compressor in the vehicle.
(4) Connect the under body suct ion an d dischar ge
lin es to th e A/C compressor.
(5) In st all the bolts tha t secure t he underbody suc-
tion and dischar ge lines to the A/C compr essor.
Tighten t he bolts to 21 N·m (15 ft. lbs.).
(6) Connect the wir e ha rness conn ector to the A/C
compressor clu tch coil.
(7) In st all the accessor y drive belt (Refer to 7 -
COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/BELTS-DRIVE -
INSTALLATION).
(8) Lower th e vehicle.
(9) Replace the receiver /dr ier if t he A/C compressor
is being r eplaced due t o an in ternal failur e (Refer to
24 - HE ATING & AIR CONDITIONING/P LUMBING/
RECEIVE R/DRIER - REMOVAL) and (Refer to 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING/RE -
CEIVER/DRIER - INSTALLATION).
(10) Reconn ect the n egative battery cable.
(11) Eva cuate th e r efrigera nt system (Refer t o 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGE RANT SYS-
TEM EVACUATE).
(12) Charge th e refrigerant system (Refer to 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/PLUMBING -
STANDARD PROCEDURE - REFRIGE RANT SYS-
TEM CH ARGE).
A/CCONDENSER
DESCRIPTION
The condenser is located in the air fl ow in fr ont of
the en gin e cooling ra diat or. The con denser is a h eat
excha nger tha t allows the high-pressure r efrigera nt
gas bein g dischar ged by the compr essor t o give up its
heat t o the air passin g over the condenser fins.
OPERATION
When t he refrigera nt gas gives up it s heat , it con-
denses. When th e refrigerant leaves the con denser, it
has become a high-pr essu re liquid refrigerant. The
volu me of a ir flowing over t he conden ser fins is crit -
ical to th e proper coolin g per formance of the air con-
ditionin g syst em. Therefor e, it is important that
