CABI N H EAT ER
DESCRIPTION
Vehicles equ ipped with t he diesel en gine are a lso
equipped with a supplem enta l cabin heat er. Th is
cabin h eater is mounted un der the vehicle a nd oper-
ates similar to an oil fired fur nace. Th e h eater burn s
sm all amou nts of fuel t o provide additional h eat to
the coolan t. Coolant is routed from the engine, to t he
su pplemen tal cabin hea ter an d then to the fr ont
heat er cor e. This provides addit iona l heat to the pas-
senger compartment . The supplement al cabin heater
system is interfaced t o the vehicles on-board com-
puter systems a nd DRBIII! diagnostics.
The supplemen tal cabin h eater h as an electr onic
control modu le t hat monitor s the h eat out pu t of the
heat er. The ca bin h eater opera tes at full loa d (5 kW),
half loa d or idle mode (no addit ional heat ) dependin g
on engine coolant tempera ture.
OPERATION
The supplement al cabin heater is activated by
using the tem perat ure cont rol on th e A/C-hea ter con-
trol. Th e su pplemen tal cabin h eater is a ctivated
when th e temper atur e contr ol is set to/or above the
upper set point. Th e su pplemen tal cabin h eater can
operat e in a full or partial loa d ra nge as well as an
idle mode, all depen dent on the engine coolant tem-
perat ure. Th e h eater unit will also tur n off if th e
temper ature control is set to less th an t he lower set
point. Th e supplemental cabin heat er can ta ke up to
three minu tes to com pletely shu t down wh en either
the hea ter tem per ature is set below the lower set
point or th e vehicle ignition is turned off.
The supplemental cabin hea ter only operates wh en
the engine is run ning, the mileage exceeds 8 kilome-
ter (5 mph ) an d the fuel ta nk volume exceeds 1/8 of a
tank. The heater should st art if th e coolant t emper-
ature is below 40° C (104° F).
NOTE: Do not apply a strong vacuum directly on
the supplemental cabin heater exhaust line. Place
the vacuum within 75 mm (3 inches) of the exhaust
port. Too strong of a vacuum can prevent the heater
from starting. The heater control module monitors
the blower speed and combustion during its start-
up.
