EX H AU ST GAS RECI RCU LA-
TION
DESCRIPTION
The EGR system can provide up to 35% exhaust
gas recirculation. Th e EGR operat es dur ing all
engine speed a nd load condition s. At wide open t hrot-
tle, it pr ovides a 5% r ecircu lat ion ra te. The EGR
sh uts down during high engine idle to a void carbon
build up on th e valve. The E GR also dea ctivates if
the EGR temper ature is too h igh. The EGR also has
a self cleaning function t hat open s and closes twice
after th e engine ha s been shut off to eliminat e soot
deposits.
Apa rt from the charge air distribution m anifold
and the m ixing cha mber, the inta ke ma nifold also
includes a finned EGR cooler. Coolant flows t hrough
the cooler to redu ce the temper ature of the recircu-
lat ed gas after it was cooled by r unning thr ough th e
cylinder h ead. The mana gement of this temper ature
significantly reduces emissions (Fig. 1).
