SHIFT SCHEDULING

tem per at u re h a s a decisive effect on t h e sh ift qu al-
it y of th e t ra n sm ission . Th e sh ift sch edu le is modi-
fied t o ext en d t he life of the t ra n sm ission while
opera t in g u n der ext rem e con dit ions an d to impr ove
dr iver com for t by m odifyin g sh ift sch edu les.
Th e t r an sm ission oil t emper a tu r e is m ea su r ed
wit h a Temper a tu r e Sen sor on th e NAG1 t ra n sm is-
sion . Th e Tem pera t ur e Sen sor is a n in t egr al com -
pon en t of t h e Tr a n sm ission Solen oid a ssem bly. If
th e Tem per a tu r e Sen sor is cau sing a pr oblem , a
DTC will be set in t h e TCM.
Th e Tra n sm ission Tem pera t ur e Sen sor is wir ed in
series wit h t h e P a rk /Neu tr a l (P /N) swit ch. Th e P/N
swit ch is a lso loca t ed in th e t r an sm ission . Th e t ra n s-
mission t em per a tu r e is only rea d by th e TCM wh en
th e P /N swit ch cl oses wh ile in th e R, D position .

3.3 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

by th e Tra n sm ission Cont r ol Modu le (TCM) a n d t he
Sh ift Lever Assem bly Modu le (SLA) t o h elp dia g-
nose Tra n sm ission a n d Sh ift er pr oblem s. Th ey a re
view ed us ing the DR BI I I # sca n tool.

mission . An y obviou s wir in g pr oblem s or lea ks

on t h e pr oblem bein g pr esen t a t th e t im e t h a t th e
test is run.
If t he TCM r ecor ds a DTC t h a t will a dver sely
affect t h e veh icles t ra n sm ission , it will r equest (via
th e comm u nica tion bu s) th a t th e E CM illu min a te
th e Ma lfu n ct ion In dica t or La m p (MIL). All tr a ns-
mission DTCs will be st or ed in t h e TCM.
3.3.1 ACTIVE (HARD) CODE
Any Diagn ost ic Tr ouble Code (DTC) t ha t is set
wh en ever t h e syst em or com pon en t is mon it or ed is
an Act ive code. Th is m ean s t h a t t h e pr oblem is
th er e ever y t im e th e TCM ch ecks t ha t syst em or
compon en t. Som e codes will set im media tely a t
st ar t u p a n d ot h ers will r equ ir e a r oa d t est un der
specific con dit ions t o set the DTC. It mu st be
deter m in ed if a code is Act ive (repea ta ble) or Stor ed
(In ter m it t en t) befor e a tt em pt in g dia gn osis.
3.3.2 STORED (INTERMITTENT) CODE
A dia gn ost ic tr ouble code t ha t is n ot t h er e ever y
tim e t he TCM checks th e cir cuit or fu n ction is a
St ored (In t er mit ten t ) code. P r oblem s t ha t com e a n d
go like th is a r e th e m ost difficu lt t o dia gn ose, th ey
mu st be looked for un der th e specific con dit ion s
th a t ca use them . If t h e DTC is r eset (a ft er a n
ign it ion cycle) th e DTC will be set t o Stor ed (In ter-
mit ten t ) st a tu s. A DTC st at u s ca n be "Active" or
"St ored" (In ter m it t ent ). Act ive is wh en t h e DTC is
pr esen t in t he cont roller a n d th e t ra n sm ission is in
th e pa rt icu la r m ode of oper a t ion for t h at DTC.
