INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
DESCRIPTION
The instrument cluster for this model is an Elec-
troMechanical Instr umen t Clust er (EMIC) that is
locat ed above the st eering column open ing in t he
instr umen t pan el, directly in fr ont of the driver (Fig.
1). The remainder of t he EMIC, in cludin g the moun ts
and t he electr ical conn ection s, are concea led within
the instru ment pa nel behind the cluster bezel and
benea th th e instrument panel top cover for the clus-
ter. The inst rument cluster inclu des analog gau ges,
meters, indicator s, a nd a coustic signa l tr ansmit-
ters.
The EMIC m odule a lso incor por ates a multi-func-
tion indicator t hat consists of a digital Liquid Cryst al
Displa y (LCD) u nit for displaying odom eter/t rip
odom eter inform ation, an electron ic digita l clock,
engine oil level information, automatic tra nsmission
gear selector position (PRNDL), and certain dia gnos-
tic in formation. Th e m ulti-funct ion indicator also ha s
four push button switches, which provide th e vehicle
operat or with a n int erface t o adjust cer tain inpu ts t o
the instru ment cluster and to select from mult iple
display opt ions. If the vehicle is equ ipped with the
appropriate options, the multi-funct ion indicator a lso
pr ovides a n outside ambient t empera ture indicator
display and an Active Service SYStem (ASSYST)
engine oil mainten ance in dicator to displa y en gine oil
level and maintenan ce reminders.
The EMIC gau ges a nd in dicators ar e visible
through a dedicated openin g in the cluster bezel on
the instru ment panel and are protected by a clear
plastic cluster len s (Fig. 2) t hat is secur ed by eigh t
integra l latches to the molded bla ck plastic cluster
hood. Four, bla ck plastic multi-function in dicator
switch push buttons protrude through dedicated
holes in a r ectan gular black pla st ic swit ch bezel t hat
is in tegr al to the clu st er lens and located nea r th e
lower edge of th e cluster directly below the multi-
function indicator LCD u nit. Th e cluster hood serves
as a visor an d sh ields th e face of the cluster fr om
ambient light and reflections to r educe gla re. The
cluster hood h as eigh t integral latches tha t en gage
eight in tegr al latch t abs on the cluster r ear cover,
sa ndwich ing the cluster h ousing unit bet ween th e
hood and the rea r cover. Th e cluster hood also has
two integral pivot loops molded in to its underside
that en gage two pairs of molded pivot hooks th at are
integra l to t he top of th e instr umen t panel base
st ructure. These pivot s allow the cluster to be r olled
rear ward to ease service access to t he wire h arness
connect ors at th e back of the clust er.
The rear of the cluster housing and the E MIC elec-
tronic cir cuitry ar e pr otected by the m olded plastic
rear cover. A mountin g ear a t ea ch u pper cor ner of
the rear cover are used t o secu re the EMIC to the
molded plastic in strument panel base unit with two
scr ews. Th e rea r cover inclu des cl eara nce holes for
the two cluster connector receptacles on t he clust er
electronic circuit board. Th e connector receptacles on
the back of t he cluster electr onic circu it boa rd con-
nect t he EMIC to t he veh icle electrical system
through two take ou ts with con nector s fr om the vehi-
cle wire harness. Th e E MIC rear cover includes a
molded mountin g tab an d a latch fea ture that
secures t he Remote Keyless En try (RKE)/immobilizer
module to t he back of the cluster. The RKE/im mobi-
lizer module is connected to th e vehicle elect rica l sys-
tem thr ough a separate take out an d connect or of the
vehicle wire har ness.
