Located between the rear cover an d the cluster
hood is the cluster housin g. The m olded plast ic clus-
ter housin g ser ves a s the car rier for th e cluster elec-
tronic circu it boar d a nd circu itry, the cluster
connect or receptacles, the gau ges, a Light Em itting
Diode (LE D) for ea ch cluster indica tor and gener al
illumination la mp, th e multi-fu nction indica tor LCD
unit, electr onic tone gen erators, the clu st er overla y,
the gauge pointers, the multi-function indicator
switch es and the four switch push but tons.
The cluster overlay is a lam ina ted plastic un it. The
da rk, visible, outer su rface of th e overla y is ma rked
with all of the gauge dial fa ces a nd graduation s, bu t
this layer is also tra nslucen t. The dar kness of th is
outer layer prevent s the clu ster from appearing clut-
tered or busy by concealing th e clu st er indicator s
that are not illuminated, while t he t ranslucence of
this layer allows those indica tors and icon s th at are
illuminate d to b e re ad ily visib le. T he und e rlying
layer of t he overlay is opaqu e and allows light fr om
the LED for ea ch of the various indica tors and illu-
mination lamps behind it to be visible throu gh th e
outer layer of th e overlay only th rough pr edeter-
mined cutout s. A rectangular opening in the overlay
at the base of the speedom eter provides a window
through which the illum ina ted multi-fu nction indica -
tor LCD u nit can be viewed.
Severa l ver sions of t he EMIC module a re offered
on th is model. These versions a ccommodate all of the
var iations of optional equipm ent an d regulator y
requiremen ts for the various market s in which the
vehicle will be offered. Th e micr opr ocessor-based
EMIC utilizes integrated circuitry, Electrically Er as-
able P rogramma ble Rea d Only Memory (EEPROM)
type mem ory storage, inform ation carried on the
Contr oller Area Networ k (CAN) da ta bus, a long wit h
severa l ha rd wir ed ana log a nd multiplexed input s t o
monitor systems, sensors and switches thr ough out
the vehicle.
In r espon se to those input s, the hardware a nd soft -
ware of the E MIC a llow it to control and in tegr ate
many electr onic funct ions a nd fea tures of the vehicle
through both ha rd wired out pu ts and the tran sm is-
sion of electron ic message out puts to other electr onic
modules in t he veh icle over t he CAN data bu s. (Refer
to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL
MODULES/COMMUNICATION - DESCRIP TION -
CAN BUS).
Besides typical instru ment cluster gauge a nd in di-
cator support, th e electronic fu nction s and fea tur es
that th e E MIC support s or controls inclu de th e fol-
lowing:
• Active Ser vice System - In vehicles equ ipped
with th e Active Service SYSTem (ASSYST) engine oil
maintenance indicator option, the EMIC electronic
circuit boar d includes a second dedicated micr opr o-
cessor. This secon d microprocessor evaluat es var ious
da ta inclu ding time, milea ge, and driving condition s
to calcula te the requir ed engine oil service interva ls,
and pr ovides both visu al an d audible aler ts to t he
vehicle oper ator wh en certain engine oil ma inten ance
services are required.
• Audi bl e War n ings - Th e EMIC electronic cir-
cuit board is equipped with a n audible tone gener ator
and pr ogrammin g t hat a llows it t o provide var ious
audible alerts t o the veh icle operat or, including bu zz-
ing and chime tones. An audible con tactless elec-
tronic relay is a lso soldered ont o the circuit board to
pr odu ce au dible clicks t hat is synchr onized with turn
signal indica tor flashing to emu lat e the sounds of a
conven tional turn signal or h aza rd warn ing flasher.
These audible clicks can occur at one of t wo rat es to
emulate both normal an d bulb-ou t tur n or hazard
flasher operation . (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/
CHIME/BUZZER - DESCRIP TION).
• Panel Lamps Dimming Control -TheEMIC
pr ovides a hard wired 12-volt Pulse-Width Modulated
(PWM) output that synchr onizes the dimming level
of a ll panel lam ps dimmer controlled lamps with that
of the cluster gener al illumination la mps and multi-
function indicator.
The EMIC houses four analog gauges and has pr o-
visions for up t o n inet een indica tors (Fig. 3). The
EMIC includes t he followin g an alog gauges:
• Co o la n t Te mp era t u re Ga ug e
• Fuel Gauge
• Speedometer
• Ta c h o m e t e r
The EMIC includes provisions for the followin g
indicator s (F ig. 3):
