OPERATION
The cigar lighter consist s of two ma jor components:
a knob an d heating elemen t unit, and th e cigar
lighter base or r eceptacle sh ell. The receptacle sh ell
is conn ected to ground, and an in su lated conta ct in
the bottom of th e shell is con nected to ba ttery cur-
rent . Th e ciga r lighter receives batt ery voltage from a
fuse in t he fuseblock on ly wh en the ignition switch is
in the Accessor y or On positions.
The knob and hea tin g elem ent are enca sed within
a sprin g-loaded h ousing, which also features a sliding
pr otective heat shield. Wh en the heating elemen t is
inser ted in the receptacle shell, the heating elem ent
resistor coil is grounded throu gh it s h ousing to the
recepta cle shell. If the cigar ligh ter knob is pushed
inwa rd, the heat sh ield slides up t oward the knob
exposing the heat ing element .
Two sma ll spr ing-clip reta iner s are located on
eith er side of the insulated contact inside t he bott om
of t he receptacle shell. These clips enga ge a nd hold
the hea ting element a gainst t he insulated contact
long enough for the r esistor coil to heat up and glow.
When the resistor coil becomes sufficien tly heat ed,
excess hea t radiates from the heat ing elemen t caus-
ing the spr ing-clips to expan d. Once th e sprin g-clips
expan d fa r enough to r elease th e heating element,
the spring-loaded h ousing for ces the kn ob and heat-
ing elemen t to pop back outward to their relaxed
position . When the cigar light er knob a nd elemen t
are pulled out of the receptacle sh ell, the prot ective
heat shield slides downwa rd on th e housing so th at
the heat ing element is recessed and shielded a round
its circum ference for sa fety.

CI RCU I T BREAK ER
DESCRIPTION
Automatic r esetting cir cuit br eakers are used t o
pr otect the power win dow volt age supply circuits.
These circuit breakers can pr otect the systems from a
sh ort cir cuit, or from an overloa d condition ca used by
an obst ructed or stuck power window regulator or
switch .
The cir cuit breaker ca nnot be r epa ired and, if
faulty or da maged, it mu st be replaced.
OPERATION
The cir cuit brea ker contains a bi-metal st rip sand-
wiched between t wo conta cts form ing the con nection
in th e circuit. An overload condition ca uses the
bi-metal strip to heat and bend to the open position,
disconnectin g current flow to the circuit. Then as the
system over load or sh ort circuit is removed, the
bi-metal strip cools, r e-establish ing conta ct to allow
curren t flow to the circuit.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - CIRCUIT BREAKER
For complete circuit descr iption s and dia gra ms,
refer to Wi r i n g .
(1) Locate the correct cir cuit breaker in the fuse-
block. Pull ou t the cir cuit brea ker slight ly, but be cer-
tain that the circuit breaker ter minals still cont act
the t erminals in th e fuseblock ca vit ies.
(2) Connect the nega tive lea d of a 12-volt DC volt-
meter to a good groun d.
(3) With the volt meter positive lead, check both
term inals of the circu it brea ker for ba tter y voltage.
If only on e terminal has ba tter y volta ge, the circuit
breaker is faulty and must be repla ced. If neither ter-
minal h as batt ery volt age, repair the open circuit
from the Power Distribut ion Cent er as requir ed.
FU SE BLOCK # 1
DESCRIPTION
An electrical fuse block is concealed u nder the
dr iver side steering column. Th e fu se block serves to
distribut e electrical current to man y of the elect rical
systems in the vehicle. Th e fuse block contains blade-
type mini fuses, relays an d micro processors that
enable a utomatic cont rol of some of th e power dist ri-
bution circu its throughout the vehicle.
The molded plastic fuse block housin g has an inte-
gra l mountin g bra cket t hat is secured with screws to
the steer ing column. A finger recess is molded int o
the cover for easy removal. A fuse layou t map is
molded onto t he back side of th e cover to ensur e
pr oper fuse iden tification.
The fu se block can not be repa ired, if th e fuse block
is fau lty or da maged or if an y inter nal circuit is
faulty or da maged, th e ent ire fuse block mu st be
repla ced.
