FREEWH EELI N G CLU T CH
DESCRIPTION
Freewheeling clutches (Fig. 154) a re inst alled in
the front planetar y gea r set between the sun gear
and the sta tor shaft, and i n th e rear planet ary gea r
set bet ween the su n gear and t he intermediate shaft .
The freewheel consists of an outer ra ce (4), an
inner race (7), a nu mber of lockin g elements (3) and
a cage (6) for these locking element s.
OPERATION
The freewh eeling clutch (Fig. 155) optimizes indi-
vidual gear sh ifts. They lock in dividu al elem ents of a
planet ary gear set together or against the tra nsmis-
sion housing in one direct ion of rot ation to allow t he
torqu e to be tra nsmitted.
If t he inner ra ce (7) of the freewheelin g clut ch is
locked and the ou ter ra ce (4) turn s cou nter-clockwise
(1), the lockin g element s (3) a dopt a dia gona l position
on a ccount of their specia l cont ours, a llowing the
freewh eel function. The inn er race (4) slides un der
the locking elemen ts (3) with minimal friction . If the
rotation of t he outer race (4) changes to clockwise (2),
the locking elements (3) stand u p and lock the outer
and inner r aces (4, 7) toget her.
